About The Position

The Library Assistant supports the daily operation of the elementary school library and assists in providing equitable access to library resources for all students. Under the direction of the Building Principal, the Library Assistant performs clerical, circulation, and organizational duties and supports a safe, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for students in grades K–3.

Requirements

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of standard library operations and clerical procedures.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications and library management systems.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, professional relationships with elementary students and school staff.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates Degree or at least two years of post high school education
  • Experience working in an elementary school or library setting.
  • Familiarity with developmentally appropriate practices for students in grades K–3.
  • Experience supporting inclusive practices and equitable access to instructional materials.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily library circulation and clerical duties, including checking materials in and out, cataloging, shelving, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Maintain an up-to-date computerized inventory and library catalog of all print and digital materials.
  • Assist in the acquisition, preparation, organization, and maintenance of library materials and supplies.
  • Support the Building Principal in managing the annual library budget for books, materials, and supplies.
  • Recommend library materials aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and Bellingham Public Schools K–3 Curriculum Guides , including materials that represent diverse perspectives and support equitable access to learning.
  • Assist elementary students in the selection and use of library materials to support literacy development, engagement, and independent learning.
  • Support positive student behavior and social-emotional learning by maintaining a structured, respectful, and welcoming library environment.
  • Introduce students to authors, illustrators, poets, and award-winning literature in developmentally appropriate ways.
  • Instruct students in the use of the library organizational system and model responsible use of library resources and materials.
  • Coordinate up to two school-wide book fairs per school year.
  • Collaborate with school staff to support classroom instruction and school-wide literacy initiatives.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Building Principal, consistent with the collective bargaining agreement.
