About The Position

Ethical Culture Fieldston School is a progressive PreK-12 independent school that has been serving students from throughout New York City and the surrounding suburbs since 1878. ECFS offers a rich curriculum in the arts, sciences, and humanities. A co-ed, nonsectarian school, it serves an inclusive community of about 1,700 students on two campuses -- one in the Riverdale section of the Bronx and the other in Manhattan. Ethical Culture School, located on the Upper West Side at 63rd Street and Central Park West, is comprised of approximately 450 students Pre-K through 5th Grade and 80 faculty members. Position Summary Ethical Culture Fieldston School is looking for a Librarian to work at our Ethical Culture division in Manhattan. This role will have a focus on online resources and technology and be part of a library team. The technical services of this librarian's role will be to work with all members of our community, in person and by creating and maintaining the digital portion of the library services site. We are seeking a full time Librarian for the 26/27 school year. This position is a 1.0 FTE ( full time equivalency ) and the hiring salary for this position is $75,261-$184,830. Please note that this is an onsite role and not performed remotely. Ethical Culture Fieldston School retains its right to modify job duties in accordance with changing operational needs.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's Degree required
  • At least 2 years of experience working with children and/ or in a library
  • The familiarity with literature for children ages PreK - 5th grade with the ability to recognize and analyse bias in children's books
  • A passion for teaching with a pleasant and positive demeanor toward all forms of teaching and learning
  • The ability to collaborate and build strong relationships with faculty, administrators, students, parents, and the overall community
  • An understanding and commitment to cultural competency and fostering an inclusive environment that supports students of all backgrounds
  • Excellent verbal, written, and oral communication skills
  • A positive attitude and the ability to listen effectively and be receptive to feedback
  • The ability to manage time effectively, stay organized, and prioritize required tasks
  • A commitment to engaging in ongoing professional development and proficiency in utilizing and learning new technologies ( i.e. , Google Workspace tools)
  • Reliability, punctuality, and consistent attendance
  • The ability to cultivate a welcoming culture in which all members of our community feel valued and appreciated

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s in in Library Science, either completed or in process preferred

Responsibilities

  • Providing ongoing library services to our community of learners, parents, and faculty
  • Maintaining responsibility for all library technical service operations, including cataloging, authority control, management of KOHA software system, patron and item data, and database management
  • Collaborating with grade-level teams to integrate library curriculum and resources into their classroom
  • Having a collaborative approach with other colleagues, including sharing resources and communicating about curriculum and students
  • Providing encouragement to students to help support their social and emotional growth
  • In collaboration with the other librarians, oversee library budget and record keeping
  • Procuring materials for research
  • Co-leading and co-teaching lessons with other librarians during research and media literacy projects for grades 3rd through 5th
  • Collaborating with classroom teachers around research projects
  • Participating in collection development and maintenance as required, including ongoing projects, both print and digital, and discussions about new resources and materials
  • Overseeing media collections, including eBooks and audiobooks and development and maintenance of databases; ensure that devices in the library support the library program
  • Updating, maintaining, and developing vision for library webpage/resources for EC community
  • Continuing to create a standardized list of subject headings in the authority file, which is both child-friendly and in tune with our values and our current vocabulary at ECFS
  • Attending all departmental, divisional, and school-wide meetings
  • Ensuring confidentiality of student information as necessary
  • Maintaining compliance with all school policies, state regulations, and educational standards
  • Appropriately addressing student behavioral issues and other challenges that may arise in the classroom in order to maintain a safe environment and a sense of calm in such situations
  • Performing other related projects and duties as needed and assigned
