About The Position

Reporting to the Associate Director for Clinical, Academic, and Research Engagement (CARE), this position partners with healthcare professionals to advance evidence-based practice, support patient care, and strengthen clinical education and research. The Liaison Librarian for Clinical Library Services serves as the primary liaison librarian to the clinical enterprise of UT Health San Antonio, which includes the UT Multispecialty & Research Hospital, the Mays Cancer Center, UT Health Physicians, UT Dentistry Clinical Operations, UT School of Nursing, and clinical residents and fellows. In this role, the liaison librarian develops and fosters collaborative relationships with clinical departments; integrates library expertise into healthcare environments; ensures access to high-quality medical information that improves outcomes for patients, providers, and the institution; and develops, delivers, and assesses clinical library services. The position is part of the CARE team-based liaison model within the Health Science Center Libraries who are responsible for outreach and engagement across the institution's clinical, academic, and research enterprises. The liaison team includes four librarians, with each of the six academic schools and the clinical enterprise having an assigned liaison who work collaboratively to promote information literacy and access to collections, tools, and expertise that support teaching, learning, research, and clinical care.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of library services and practices related to reference, instruction, outreach, and collection management, ideally in an academic or health sciences library.
  • Strong knowledge of health science information resources including databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, UpToDate, etc., and evidence-based medicine.
  • Ability to provide high-quality services to diverse library patrons to meet their academic, research, and clinical information needs.
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management skills and ability to balance multiple priorities, schedule constraints, and deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team and to develop and maintain strong working relationships with library patrons and university colleagues.
  • Working knowledge of standard productivity software (Microsoft Office); citation management software; integrated library systems and library-related platforms (ExLibris Alma, Koha, Springshare, etc.); electronic resource systems and research platforms (ORCID).
  • Ability to develop and execute a variety of advanced and complex search strategies coupled with knowledge to evaluate research for accuracy, validity, and clinical relevance.
  • Working knowledge of information literacy competencies and frameworks, data literacy, and health informatics.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication and ability to think critically, problem solve and collaborate.
  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program OR equivalent.
  • 5 or more years of post-MLIS professional library experience in a public, academic, medical, health sciences, or clinical library required.
  • Evidence of increasingly responsible work assignments in public or technical library services.

  • Familiarity with conducting structured reviews and knowledge of systematic review methodologies.

  • Familiarity with the research process and funding policies of federal agencies.
  • Membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) or eligibility.
  • Advanced graduate degree (second master’s or doctoral degree).

Responsibilities

  • Works collaboratively to plan, develop, implement, and provides high-quality, expert information services to clinical faculty, staff, residents, and students of UT San Antonio Health Science Center.
  • Evaluates, recommends, manages, and promotes access to biomedical and consumer health information resources appropriate for clinical needs and to enhance the existing collections and resources.
  • Promotes clinical library services and evidence-based practice to clinical departments and teams by participating in clinical rounds, case conferences, and departmental meetings with clinicians.
  • Designs and delivers customized instruction on evidence-based practice, information literacy, and research skills for clinicians, faculty, residents, students, and staff.
  • Creates instructional materials in multiple formats (videos, online tutorials, guides, etc.) for use by students, residents, faculty, and staff in multiple clinical environments.
  • Provides reference and research support by conducting expert literature and database searches; participating in structured reviews; staffing the library’s virtual reference service; and participating in the On-Call Librarian rotation.
  • Provides consultations and workshops to support research projects, systematic reviews, grant proposals, and publications.
  • Offers personalized current awareness services to keep clinicians and researchers updated in their fields.
  • Collaborates with clinicians and educators to develop tailored outreach initiatives to raise awareness of clinical library services and to develop patient and staff education resources that support health literacy.
  • Supports scholarly communication, including citation management, publishing support, and guidance on research dissemination.
  • Coordinates assessment and reports on clinical library service activities for university and library reports and publications.
  • Contributes to assessment, policy development, and service improvement initiatives that enhance clinical information support.
  • Assists with library-wide initiatives related to promotion and marketing of library services and with library grant-funded activities.
  • Participates in library planning activities and serves on library and campus committees.
  • Performs additional or special duties as assigned.
