The Librarian I - Children's Service (Part-Time) is responsible for providing library services to children and adults, planning and presenting library programming, and promoting library resources. This role involves outreach to community venues, advocating for children's needs within the library, and ensuring effective use of library materials. The position requires working in an office environment with varying hours, including evenings and weekends.

  • Assist the general public with information regarding library materials and equipment.
  • Participate in library committee work.
  • Maintain and select library materials based on established criteria and user needs.
  • Promote library use within the community.
  • Answer reference questions and perform readers' advisory services.
  • Prepare and present programs regarding library services and materials to various age groups.
  • Maintain work records and prepare reports.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and select materials.
  • Prepare original cataloging copy for non-specialized materials.
  • Solve routine classification and cataloging problems.
  • Reconcile differences in bibliographic records.
  • Train staff in policies, procedures, and operation of various automated systems.
  • Perform related duties and fulfill responsibilities as required.
  • Master's Degree in Library Science, Library and Information Studies/Science or Information Studies/Science from an ALA accredited university or obtain within six months of hire.
  • Background check with satisfactory results required.
  • Completion of the City of San Antonio's Cash-Handling Certification Training.
  • Passion for and desire to work with children (0 to 12 years) in a public library setting.
  • Experience fostering and facilitating parent and child participation in children's library programming.
  • Experience conducting outreach to children in community venues including schools.
  • Advocacy experience for children in the library organization and community.
  • Language proficiency, other than English.
  • Hourly wage of $21.90
