About The Position

The Librarian for Children's Services at Durham County's Main Library is responsible for developing and providing library services and programs aimed at youth from birth to age 12. This role involves working independently under the supervision of the Children's Services Manager, with a focus on promoting library services, conducting outreach, and planning special events. The position requires flexibility, as it includes evening and weekend shifts, and may involve working at various library locations within Durham County.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited master's program in library science from an ALA accredited library school.
  • Thorough knowledge of current library practices, public library services, and programs, especially in children's services.
  • Thorough knowledge of children's literature.
  • Skilled with library technology.
  • Ability to understand and interpret library rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain pleasant and effective working relationships with other employees and library patrons.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service via phone, online chat, email, and in-person.
  • Ability to work pleasantly and effectively with people of all ages.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to speak Spanish strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and present programs for youth from birth to age 12 within and outside the library.
  • Promote library services, programming, and resources through outreach efforts.
  • Participate in planning special events such as the summer reading program and Library Fest.
  • Expand the library's outreach to community organizations and collaborate with agencies serving youth.
  • Keep current with new trends in library planning and services, especially those affecting youth.
  • Assist customers at the Information desk by providing reference, reader's advisory, and computer assistance.
  • Provide reference and reader's advisory services for customers via phone, online chat, and email.
  • Interpret library policies and procedures to the public.
  • Act as Manager on Duty and mediate customer service issues in the Location Manager's absence.
  • Create book displays and book lists to promote the use of library materials.
  • Assist with collection maintenance including shelf-reading and collection organization.
  • Actively serve on system-wide teams and committees as assigned.
