The International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) represents over 1.4 million working Americans across the country in a diverse range of fields. We are seeking an energetic advocate with at least 5 years of combined experience in policy analysis and direct lobbying for its fast-paced legislative department to fight for the working American. The Legislative Representative & Policy Advisor will serve as the lead advocate on issues relating to energy and construction/building trades issues. The Legislative Representative will also assist current legislative staff on transportation and trade issues, as well as other miscellaneous items as needed.

  • Represent the IBT before members of Congress, congressional staff members, and congressional committee staff on legislative issues of interest to the union and/or affiliated bodies.
  • Recommend congressional and regulatory action by the IBT on legislative and regulatory issues based on analysis and input from various departments.
  • Research, prepare and write testimony, regulatory comment and letters of position on legislative and regulatory issues of interest to the union.
  • Provide expert assistance to members of Congress and their staff in drafting legislation, committee reports, floor amendments, and other congressional documents.
  • Meet with outside coalitions and interest groups to represent the IBT on legislative and regulatory positions of mutual interest.
  • Identify issues of impact to the IBT and proactively seek out positions. Develop legislative goals and identify congressional action related to those issue areas.
  • Provide legislative training and updates to local union affiliates as needed.
  • Bachelor's degree in political science, public policy, or other applicable fields; minimum 5 years of direct experience in a Congressional office or as a policy advocate/lobbyist/government relations professional.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and execute legislative campaigns.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in coordination with colleagues, outside stakeholders, and others.
  • Ability to communicate union priorities at all levels - including to rank and file members, union leadership, and policy makers.
  • Strong writing and analytical skills, including for legislative and regulatory text.
  • Experience in transportation and/or building trades issues.
