About The Position

AARP’s Legal Counsel for the Elderly (LCE) advocates for the dignity and rights of vulnerable Washington, D.C. seniors aged 60 and above. LCE provides free legal and social work services to those in need, aiming to empower, defend, protect, and assist thousands of clients annually across various civil law areas. This paid internship position, under the supervision of an experienced and licensed attorney, will expose the intern to and involve them in diverse legal functions within an elder law practice serving low-income older persons. Interns will gain client interaction skills, subject area knowledge, and supervised experience in individual client representation and systemic advocacy. The role is suitable for students interested in issues such as landlord-tenant law, economic security, healthcare benefits, long-term care services, homeownership preservation, combating fraud and financial abuse, and developing solutions to systemic problems. The internship is scheduled to begin in Summer 2026 and conclude in August.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited law school, classified as a rising 2L, 2L, rising 3L, or 3L at the start of the internship
  • Demonstrated interest in serving the needs of low income 60+ individuals
  • Sensitivity to the needs of the elderly
  • Regular and reliable job attendance
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Exhibit respect and understanding of others to maintain professional relationships
  • Independent judgement in evaluation options to make sound decisions
  • Ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate noise

Responsibilities

  • Interviewing current and prospective clients
  • Meeting clients in the community (at home or in various facilities)
