About The Position

The Legal Assistant position at Washington County is responsible for providing skilled and confidential legal assistance to attorneys and staff within the County Attorney's Office, specifically in the Criminal Division. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent AND completion of a one-year business school or vocational-technical program in Legal Studies AND three years of experience in a law office.
  • Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Legal Assistant/Paralegal studies AND two years of experience in a law office.
  • Bachelor's Degree AND a Paralegal Certificate AND two years of experience in a law office.
  • An approved equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a Legal Assistant/Paralegal in Criminal Law.
  • Experience in a public sector law office.
  • Experience with digital evidence dissemination and storage.
  • Familiarity with law enforcement technology programs like Evidence.com.
  • Experience with Minnesota Courts and Bureau of Criminal Apprehension systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Responsibilities

  • Receive time-sensitive referrals from law enforcement agencies and create case files for attorneys.
  • Prepare, proof, and file pleadings, documents, and correspondence according to legal standards.
  • Subpoena victims and witnesses for court proceedings.
  • Assist attorneys with hearings and trials by preparing exhibits and managing evidence.
  • Prepare and edit investigative reports and documents for disclosure in compliance with legal procedures.
  • Author and sign correspondence as permitted by the Legal Assistant status.
  • Obtain, analyze, and organize legal case documents and maintain accurate records.
  • Utilize complex databases for legal case management and research.
  • Assist in training Law Clerks and maintain their work schedules.
  • Communicate case status to attorneys and involved parties.
  • Process accounts payable and coordinate purchasing for department supplies.
  • Schedule hearings and depositions for attorneys.
  • Transcribe various audio recordings related to legal cases.
