About The Position

Legal Assistant – Litigation At Preti Flaherty, we know that exceptional people and efficient processes drive our continued success. Our Legal Assistants are integral members of our team, providing high-level administrative and legal support to attorneys and contributing meaningfully to our client service and case outcomes. We are seeking a seasoned and highly organized Legal Assistant to join our Portland, Maine based team. This is a unique opportunity to support a group of talented attorneys who litigate matters that shape industries, resolve business-critical conflicts, and appear in courts and arbitration forums across the country.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of legal assistant experience, with strong preference for litigation practice experience
  • Familiarity with court rules and filing procedures, including electronic filing systems (e.g., CM/ECF, PACER)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel) and litigation management software
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organization, and time management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines under pressure
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in handling sensitive and confidential matters
  • Calm under pressure, proactive, and solutions-oriented
  • Self-starter with strong initiative and the ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with commercial litigation, arbitration, or trial support
  • Familiarity with document management systems (e.g., iManage, NetDocuments, Relativity, Everlaw, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-level administrative and litigation support to attorneys in a fast-paced commercial litigation practice through trial and appeal
  • Draft, format, and proofread legal documents including pleadings, discovery, correspondence, motions, and memoranda
  • Coordinate and manage court filings (state and federal, including e-filing), tracking deadlines, and managing case dockets
  • Coordinate litigation calendars, manage docketing deadlines, and support case strategy execution
  • Schedule and coordinate depositions, meetings arbitrations, mediations, hearings, client meetings, and travel
  • Organize electronic and paper case files, trial notebooks, and discovery
  • Communicate professionally with clients, courts, experts, and opposing counsel
  • Assist with trial preparation, including organizing exhibits, witness lists, and logistics
