About The Position

The Legal Assistant II provides comprehensive legal, clerical, administrative, and automated litigation support to Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) within the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Georgia. This role requires specialized knowledge of legal procedures, litigation support, and office administration to enhance the effectiveness of attorneys handling complex criminal matters.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED (college coursework or degree in a related field preferred).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of relevant professional legal experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with attorneys, court personnel, law enforcement, and the public.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Typing speed of at least 40 words per minute with minimal errors.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to successfully obtain and maintain a DOJ background investigation.
  • Demonstrated experience performing litigation support and legal administrative duties as described above

Responsibilities

  • Examine, prepare, and process complex and voluminous legal documents, including complaints, motions, pleadings, subpoenas, discovery materials, correspondence, and court filings.
  • Independently assemble and prepare legal documents by obtaining required information from files, law enforcement agencies, and other sources.
  • Draft legal documents with limited instruction from AUSAs, ensuring compliance with applicable rules of style, format, and procedure.
  • Verify legal citations and statutory references using original and online legal research tools.
  • Develop tables of contents and indices for briefs and filings.
  • Assist attorneys with trial preparation by compiling trial notebooks, witness lists, exhibit lists, and jury instructions.
  • Coordinate with victim/witness specialists to ensure compliance with Department of Justice victim rights guidelines.
  • Prepare documents, charts, graphics, and visual materials for courtroom presentations.
  • Provide technical litigation support, including scanning, exhibit preparation, document enlargement, and multimedia duplication.
  • Receive and assist visitors and telephone callers, determine urgency of matters, and route inquiries appropriately.
  • Establish, maintain, organize, and disposition legal files and records in accordance with office procedures.
  • Perform docketing functions using automated case tracking systems, including opening, updating, and closing cases.
  • Track case deadlines, hearings, trials, and filing dates; maintain attorney calendars and suspense systems.
  • Obligate and monitor litigation-related expenditures; review invoices and submit documentation for payment.
  • Arrange travel and prepare travel authorizations and vouchers.
  • Produce complex legal and administrative documents using Microsoft Office and other software applications.
  • Integrate data from databases, spreadsheets, and graphics into written legal materials and presentations.
  • Ensure accuracy in formatting, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Perform related duties as assigned within the scope of the position.
