About The Position

This position is responsible for performing a variety of clerical and administrative tasks related to criminal cases in the District Attorney's office. Legal Assistant II is the succeeding classification level following the entry level position of Legal Assistant I. Work is performed in accordance with the policies and procedures of the District Attorney's office and relevant federal, state and county codes and ordinances. The Office Manager assigns work in terms of departmental goals and objectives.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of legal terminology and legal forms.
  • Knowledge of Business English, spelling, punctuation, and grammatical usage.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Skill in operating—a variety of word processing-systems and office equipment.
  • Ability to be calm and tolerant of stress imposed by other people or circumstances.
  • Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with court and office personnel, and with those having business with the court and/or office.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions of a technical and professional nature.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, using organized thoughts.
  • Ability to plan, organize coordinate with and supervise the activities and work flow of others.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to coordinate assigned services and activities with other individuals, agencies, and departments.
  • Associate’s Degree (2 year degree) in related legal field.
  • Minimum of (5) years of experience in legal firm or legal office.
  • OR have a combination of education, training and work experience that is equivalent to #1 and #2 above that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job.

Responsibilities

  • Opens all criminal cases; runs criminal history on cases; orders reports, victim and witness statements and evidence on cases; types incident report; prepares reciprocal discovery motions; contacts victims or witnesses prior to trial, as needed.
  • Types indictments and accusations for Superior and State court.
  • Prepares courtroom dockets.
  • Organizes, prepares, processes and maintains various legal correspondence and paperwork.
  • Records case outcomes on court calendars.
  • Types bench warrants, bond forfeitures and subpoenas as requested.
  • Provides traffic quotes.
  • Prepares bench warrant set asides.
  • Types letters, reports and other documents as required.
  • Receives, sorts and distributes mail.
  • Orders and maintains inventory of general office supplies.
  • Greets visitors and receives and responds to inquiries in person and on the telephone; directs visitors/callers to appropriate person or department.
  • Employees in this classification may be expected to perform any related duties as required by proper authority.
