About The Position

Acting under the direction and supervision of leadership, provides general Legal Assistant support of the litigation functions and responsibilities of the Assistant Litigation Counsel, as well as in support of the more general legal needs of the WVU Health System Labor and Employment Team and Legal Department.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience in legal or related field.
  • Good verbal and writing skills.
  • Ability to organize, proofread, redact and edit documents.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Basic computer knowledge and ability to operate standard office equipment, software and AI tools.
  • Willingness to adapt and reprioritize tasks in a changing environment.
  • Possess excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize while working independently.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, efficiently, and professionally both verbally and in writing.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting.
  • Manual dexterity used in operating standard office equipment.
  • Lifting of no more than 10 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates degree in business/office management, secretarial sciences, or related legal field.
  • Experience with database and document management systems.
  • Experience related to general litigation and legal processes.
  • Advanced experience in Microsoft Office and Adobe.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a wide range of support to WVUHS Employment and Litigation teams.
  • Key point of contact, responsible for calendar management, travel arrangements (when necessary), and expense reimbursement processing for attorneys.
  • Communicate timely and professionally with internal WVUHS departments regarding legal matters.
  • Draft cover letters, complete forms, prepare documents for signature, and coordinate execution and mailing or electronic filing of legal documents.
  • Provide in-person assistance to participants at mediations, depositions, meetings and other in-person events.
  • Maintain appropriate departmental filing system and departmental files ensuring ease of access in timely manner to accurate information.
  • Complete various projects related to the organization of documents, filing systems, document scanning, and management of cases.
  • Assist with drafting employment-related agreements such as severance agreements, releases and employment contracts.
  • Circulate copies of litigation documents to employment and litigation team members and other stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Support the WVUHS Legal Services Department in all matters, including support of other counsel and staff within the Department as needed.
  • Train other personnel in litigation databases as directed.
  • Organize and track files for important case documents, including pleadings and voluminous discovery documents; creating files and maintaining files in electronic case management databases.
  • Obtaining and assisting with the review and redaction of employment records and other discovery materials in response to subpoenas, records requests, and court orders.
  • Collect employment records and policies from various sources, label, organize and compile them.
