About The Position

The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness. GRADE 14 This position offers a salary range of $28.01/hour - $39.39/hour, with potential for advancement up to $43.49/hour based on qualifications, equity, and hiring guidelines. Initial salary offers are determined by qualifications, experience, and available budget, and typically do not exceed $39.39/ hour. LOCATION OF POSITION Office of the Attorney General Securities Division 200 St. Paul Place Baltimore, Maryland 21202 Main Purpose of Job The OAG is seeking applicants for the position of Legal Administrative Specialist in the Securities Division. The mission of the Securities Division is to protect Maryland investors from investment fraud and misrepresentation. In addition, the Division regulates the sale in Maryland of certain business opportunities including franchise and securities offerings, investigates complaints about potential violations of the investor protection laws, and provides consumers with information they need to make appropriate investment decisions and avoid securities fraud and abuse. The Securities Division has 14 attorneys, including the Commissioner and two Assistant Commissioners, five examiners, three investigators, and six support professionals. The Legal Administrative Specialist provides administrative and paralegal support to the Assistant Attorneys General, investigators, examiners and other staff who work in the Securities Division. The candidate selected for this position will be expected to help implement workflow procedures, including recommending new procedures, technology or filing systems where appropriate, and assisting in other daily operations of the Division. This position is not eligible for telework.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Two years of administrative staff or professional work in a legal office setting.
  • Qualified applicants should demonstrate proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Strong interpersonal, writing and organizational skills required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university
  • Experience and/or familiarity with securities and franchise records, Westlaw, PACER, MDEC and internet research
  • Experience with document review and production software and database applications
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and experience with document management systems
  • Knowledge of litigation support processes, including document preparation, case file organization, and legal research

Responsibilities

  • Provide administrative and office support for regulatory filing, financial, and database recordkeeping
  • Prepare and transmit correspondence and various documents
  • Create, organize, and maintain financial and regulatory records and other office files
  • Answer calls and respond to emails to assist the public, attorneys and industry callers and correspondents
  • Organize documents for cases and assist in all aspects of litigation preparation, research, and support
  • Review and research Securities Division and federal securities records
  • Process mail, including registration applications, fees, and other filings; and closing and archiving files in accordance with Division record retention schedule

  • As a contractual employee, you will pay 25% of the premiums for medical and prescription coverage, including enrolled dependents, while the State of Maryland subsidizes the remaining 75%.

  • Additionally, contractual employees who have worked 120 days within a 12-month period may be granted leave, accruing at one hour for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 40 hours per calendar year.
  • The State also offers a free mass transit benefit for local bus and express bus services.
