About The Position

Transgender Law Center’s Legal Administrative Assistant/Paralegal will provide key administrative support for the organization’s litigation team and legal services project (LSP), including the prison mail program. This role is ideal for someone highly organized and detail-oriented, with a deep commitment to transgender justice and racial equity, who is interested in contributing to legal advocacy through behind-the-scenes work. The person in this role will help manage crucial functions like processing incoming and outgoing prison mail, coordinating litigation-related tasks, supporting client communications, and handling a wide range of administrative duties that keep our legal programs running smoothly. This is an opportunity for someone who wants to build or deepen experience in movement-aligned legal work and gain exposure to legal advocacy on behalf of transgender people, particularly those navigating prisons, immigration detention, and other carceral systems.

Requirements

  • Familiarity with the transgender community and transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) legal issues.
  • Experience working in a law office or in an administrative role.
  • Very strong computer skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and Salesforce.
  • For Paralegal, meets education and/or experience requirements of any legal definition of 'paralegal' in the state where employed.
  • Excellent speaking and writing abilities.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly, take initiative, and work well under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours when necessary to meet deadlines.
  • Skill at working collegially and collaboratively both within the organization and with clients, co-counsel, and other colleagues.
  • A demonstrated awareness of and commitment to a broad range of social, racial, economic, and disability justice issues and an understanding of the multiple communities TLC represents.
  • Enthusiasm for the work of TLC and its potential.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with racial justice, immigrants’ rights, and/or TGNC justice work.
  • Proficiency in one or more languages other than English.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure administrative functions of the prison mail response program, including acquiring incoming mail from the post office, sorting and scanning incoming letters, and printing and mailing outgoing letters.
  • Conduct helpdesk intakes over the phone and respond to requests for information via the Legal Services Project helpdesk and prison mail response program.
  • Assist with court filings and client visits, including ensuring compliance with court rules.
  • Edit, format, and cite-check legal documents and publications.
  • Maintain and update information and files in paper and electronic form for cases and policy efforts.
  • Provide support with correspondence, including drafting, copying, scanning, faxing, emailing and mailing documents.
  • Provide research and administrative help to legal team.
  • Review client documents in preparation for litigation.
  • Conduct client interviews, including in prisons, jails, and immigration detention centers, and coordinate client correspondence and relations as needed.
  • Coordinate the smooth preparation of the legal team’s quarterly board report.
  • Schedule and support logistics and note taking for in-person, videoconference, and telephone meetings, both within TLC and with external partners as well as visits to locked facilities and client travel.
  • Update and draft publications and legal-related content on TLC’s website.
  • Assist with reconciling receipts and invoices with organization payment tool.
  • Other tasks as needed to support TLC’s litigation, policy, and legal services work.
