About The Position

The University of Hawai'i is seeking a part-time Lecturer in the College of Education, specifically within the Department of Special Education. This position is temporary and contingent upon student enrollment, position availability, and funding. The lecturer will be responsible for teaching various initial teacher licensure courses, supervising and mentoring teacher candidates, conducting field experience seminars, and evaluating candidates' lesson plans and assignments. The role may require teaching during day, evening, or weekend hours, both on-campus and off-campus, and the selectee must be able to travel to off-site locations. Additionally, the lecturer is required to complete the COE New Faculty orientation in the first year and pass a criminal background check and Title IX training.

Requirements

  • Earned master's degree in special education or related field from a college or university of recognized standing, or equivalent combination of graduate education and experience
  • Evidence of ability to teach effectively
  • Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others
  • Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner, fulfilled by a valid Hawai'i Driver's License (class 3) or comparable means of transportation
  • Three years full-time K-12 teaching experience, as teacher of record
  • Experience working with diverse/multicultural populations
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities

Responsibilities

  • Teach various initial teacher licensure courses in the Department of Special Education (SPED)
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate teacher candidates in field-based settings
  • Conduct field experience seminars and student teaching seminars
  • Evaluate candidates' lesson plans and field-based program assignments
  • Conduct midterm and end-of-semester conferences
  • Participate in collaborative relationships with mentor teachers, school administrators, and staff
  • Attend faculty meetings and other duties that the supervisor assigns
