About The Position

The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for a full-time Lecturer in Filmmaking to begin Fall 2026. We seek a dynamic educator and practitioner to support our rapidly growing minor in Film & Production Studies--an interdisciplinary program combining hands-on production experience with the study of film history and critical analysis--while also contributing to the Edwards College's broader media and visual arts community through equipment oversight, collaborative initiatives, and event coordination. The standard teaching load is five courses per semester, with an expected course release of three courses per year for additional administrative duties (described below). Primary responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses in filmmaking and related areas. Courses may include, but are not limited to, FILM 101 Introduction to Film Studies, FILM 102 Introduction to Film Production, FILM 453 Cinematography, COMM 430 Film and Culture: Ethnographic Film, FILM 460/COMM 460 Editing & Post-Production, and special topics such as Directing the Short Film and Documentary Filmmaking. Additional courses will support the department's presence in the Humanities Core Curriculum. In addition to teaching, the Lecturer of Filmmaking will: oversee and maintain the Edwards College Video and Photography Equipment Library, ensuring student access to and training in the use of production gear; organize the annual CCU Film Festival, a showcase of student work and community engagement; collaborate with faculty across departments (such as Music, Visual Arts, Theater, and Communication, Media, and Culture) to support interdisciplinary film initiatives and equipment needs; collaborate with community partners such as Visit Myrtle Beach; and mentor students producing short narrative and documentary films as part of the minor's experiential learning focus.

Requirements

  • A terminal degree in filmmaking (or a related field) at time of appointment
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching
  • Proficiency in digital filmmaking and editing
  • Understanding of and experience with equipment ranging from cameras (lenses and bodies) to sound/audio and lighting
  • Must hold the appropriate terminal degree or meet the established alternative qualifications and exhibit strong potential for excellence in teaching.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching undergraduate courses in filmmaking and related areas.
  • Oversee and maintain the Edwards College Video and Photography Equipment Library.
  • Organize the annual CCU Film Festival.
  • Collaborate with faculty across departments to support interdisciplinary film initiatives and equipment needs.
  • Collaborate with community partners such as Visit Myrtle Beach.
  • Mentor students producing short narrative and documentary films as part of the minor's experiential learning focus.
  • Teaches students in the classroom, laboratory, and/or studio.
  • Prepares content, syllabi, and University Moodle/curricular site for each course and/or lab assigned each semester. Communicates to students after reviewing assignments. Calculates and assigns grades (e.g., mid-term and final) through established procedures listed in the Faculty Manual and University catalog. Tracks and reports absences as directed by the Office of the Registrar.
  • Posts and holds regular office hours each week per College and University guidelines. Engages in University-related activities including committee assignments, meetings, ceremonies, events and scholarly pursuits as prescribed in the Faculty Manual.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
