About The Position

The Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine (MSOM) is dedicated to educating the next generation of physicians. Located in Hagerstown, Maryland, MSOM is part of Meritus Health, which serves over 200,000 residents in the tri-state area. The inaugural class will begin in July 2025, with a state-of-the-art facility designed to foster a dynamic learning environment. The Learning Specialist role is crucial in assisting students to maximize their educational outcomes through various support strategies.

Requirements

  • PhD or similar degree in Education, Higher Education, or Special Education.
  • 3 or more years in an academic medical school.
  • 3-5 years' experience with outcomes for student advancement.
  • Experience working with tutoring and/or peer-assisted learning.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated conceptual, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Innovative and solution-oriented approach to sensitive and complex problems.
  • Ability to maintain collaborative and productive relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with various constituency groups.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in academic support/learning theory for Medical or post-bac students.
  • Minimum 3 years' related experience in an academic setting providing intervention strategies to diverse learners.
  • Experience in medical education with demonstrated success in implementing academic support and cognitive skills services.
  • Experience with standardized examinations.
  • Experience as an academic counselor, coach, or mentor.
  • Experience teaching at the medical school level.

Responsibilities

  • Expertise in relevant learning strategies and theories.
  • Working with students one-on-one, in workshops and programs.
  • Collaborating with teaching assistants and faculty for tutoring and mentorship.
  • Serving on the students at risk committee (STARc) committee.
  • Serving on the Performance and Progress committee.
  • Developing programs that support all students' academic needs.
  • Conducting individual assessments and counseling to identify learning patterns, focusing on test-taking skills, time management, anxiety, organizational skills, learning styles, clinical reasoning, and preparation for licensure examinations and Board certification.
  • Overseeing student tutors and peer-facilitated trainings.
  • Collaborating with admissions to test students for learning styles.
  • Working with student affairs, mentors, and medical education teaching to improve student experience.
  • May require hours that are not 8-5 for student success.
