About the position

The Learning Designer at Boston University Virtual is responsible for collaborating with faculty and subject matter experts to design, develop, and enhance high-quality online degree and certificate programs. This role requires a broad range of skills in instructional design, learner journey mapping, and the creation of engaging content, all while adhering to learning science and quality standards. The ideal candidate will have experience in a dynamic online environment and a passion for creating meaningful learning experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate and lead instructional design and program/course development activities with various stakeholders.
  • Ensure instructional goals and objectives are connected across courses and programs.
  • Develop and align to common frameworks including objectives, skills mapping, grading, assessments, and rubrics.
  • Create interactive learning experiences and compelling course content to enhance student engagement.
  • Visualize instructional graphics and design exercises, simulations, and activities using innovative technologies.
  • Apply pedagogical guidance in the design and delivery of online programs for both synchronous and asynchronous formats.
  • Guide faculty through the design and development process, including writing learning objectives and course outlines.
  • Cultivate collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders to align on priorities and timelines.
  • Collaborate with Media Producers to design supporting elements that enhance the learner experience.
  • Ensure all programs meet accessibility standards and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Document and update standards for program and course design at BU Virtual.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in instructional design and instructional technology, preferably in an online or university environment.
  • 5-7 years of hands-on experience in designing, developing, and delivering digital instructional content.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply instructional design principles and learning theory in creating learning experiences.
  • Strong familiarity with education technology tools including content management systems and learning management systems.
  • Strong writing and visual design skills, with the ability to storyboard concepts and write effective instructional text.
  • Understanding of lesson and curriculum planning and its implications for course delivery.
  • Familiarity with building programs and courses in a university's learning management system.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage conflicting priorities.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to lead teams in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to adapt to change in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in instructional design, education technology, or a related field.
