The company is actively seeking talented, driven, and highly-productive applicants for the position of Leak Detection Technician I to join their dynamic team. Under the supervision of the Director of Asset Management, the Leak Detection Technician is responsible for assisting with the development, implementation, and ongoing application of a distribution system leak detection program and other field-related activities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of the identification and use of common hand tools and leak detection equipment.
  • General knowledge of the principles of leak detection.
  • Working knowledge of the company service area and system.
  • Ability to perform strenuous outdoor physical work and lifting requiring manual dexterity, agility, strength, stamina and coordination.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public.
  • Ability to adapt and apply new technology.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and initiative.
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
  • Three (3) years of prior satisfactory experience in repair of mains and services.
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record at all times.
  • Possession of a valid Grade D1 California Water Distribution Operator Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Performs leak detection surveys and correlation activities in the field and office to locate SJW and customer leaks.
  • Interfaces with Engineering Department staff, Distribution System Department staff, customers, and vendors to carry out and coordinate leak survey activities.
  • Provides on-demand leak locating services to limit extent of main break excavations.
  • Performs in-house training for SJW personnel on leak detection equipment.
  • Maintains and updates detailed records of maps, drawings, and leak survey logs.
  • Collects asset management data related to asset condition, failures, and corrective actions.
  • Provides periodic reports on the leak detection program and special assignments.
  • Writes progress reports as directed.
  • Attends specialized training courses for leak detection.
  • Reviews post construction record drawings.
  • Keeps work areas, tools, equipment and vehicles in a clean, safe and good operating condition, adhering to all established safety rules, regulations and operating procedures at all times.
  • Responds to company-wide emergency response duties related to distribution operations and leak detection services.
  • Responds to emergency call-ins on an as-needed basis.
  • Coordinates and performs DSOD required dam inspections.
  • Supports field activities related to transient analyses.
