About The Position

The Lead Trauma Registrar is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the trauma registry team, ensuring accurate data collection and abstraction from patient records, and maintaining compliance with national standards. The Lead Trauma Registrar utilizes data analysis to support trauma performance improvement and patient safety initiatives, collaborating with healthcare professionals across the trauma center to identify opportunities for quality improvement and reporting findings to relevant stakeholders. The role typically includes leading a team of trauma registrars, providing training, quality control, and ensuring timely submission of data to state and national trauma registries.

Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year of experience as a trauma registrar, including knowledge of trauma coding systems (e.g., AIS, ICD-10), data abstraction principles, and trauma registry software
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Certified Specialist in Trauma Registry (CSTR) certification from the American Trauma Society (ATS) required or ability to obtain within one year of hire
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including data entry, database management, and reporting tools.

Responsibilities

  • Data Management and Quality Control
  • Supervise data abstraction and entry processes by trauma registrars, ensuring accuracy and completeness of information collected from patient records.
  • Conduct regular data quality audits and reviews to identify inconsistencies or errors, taking corrective actions as needed.
  • Monitor compliance with national trauma registry standards set by the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
  • Implement data validation procedures to maintain the integrity of trauma registry.
  • Maintain oversight of registry data for two ACS verified trauma centers - Level 1 Pediatric Trauma (Arthur M. Blank Hospital) and Level 2 Pediatric Trauma (Scottish Rite Hospital).
  • Team Supervision and Training
  • Supervise and mentor a team of trauma registrars, providing ongoing training on data abstraction guidelines, coding systems, and trauma registry software.
  • Supervise performance, time and attendance, productivity, and other key performance metrics as identified by department leaders.
  • Assign tasks and delegate responsibilities to ensure efficient workflow within the trauma registry team.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback to team members.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting
  • Generate comprehensive reports on trauma patient demographics, injury patterns, treatment outcomes, and quality metrics.
  • Analyze data to identify trends and areas for improvement in trauma care delivery.
  • Provide data and analysis to support trauma performance improvement / patient safety activities.
  • Present findings to the Trauma Performance Improvement Committee and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Collaboration and Communication
  • Collaborate with trauma surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate data collection and timely reporting.
  • Coordinate with the Trauma Program Director on initiatives related to trauma registry data utilization and quality improvement.
  • Maintain open communication with external agencies regarding trauma registry data submission requirements.
