About The Position

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead Transportation Engineer with experience in Highway design to join our dynamic Civil Engineering group in Mid Atlantic District. The candidate may be located in: Washington, DC, Philadelphia, PA, Herndon, VA, Baltimore, MD, Virginia Beach, VA or Richmond, VA. The ideal candidate should have experience in the design of highways, roadway geometric design, roadway plan production, and drainage design for traditional delivery and/or alternative delivery projects. Responsibilities include design and plan production and project management support responsibilities. The successful candidate will have a comprehensive range of roadway design experience related to transportation infrastructure projects which may include geometric design, complete streets, temporary traffic control, and highway design. This role will be a key contributor in assisting in daily activities and mentoring of our transportation team. Primary duties would center on supporting flagship infrastructure programs across the transportation, transit, site, and environmental sectors. Ideal candidates would be responsible for leading technical design programs, facilitating client engagement sessions, reinforcing internal design standards, and identifying future contract opportunities. Candidate will partner with senior team to grow the technical expertise across the region.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 7 to 10 years of relevant post education experience in engineering and civil design.
  • P.E. license required (multi-state preferred).
  • Proficient with civil engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to permitting and project work-related issues.
  • Extensive knowledge of infrastructure and highway design.
  • Highly proficient with technical writing and discipline-specific design software.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management.
  • Well-defined specific knowledge of relevant civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations on various aspects of construction and design.
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail.
  • Works independently with minimal oversight and provides guidance to junior team members.
  • Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and directing subcontractors.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Develop construction plans, specifications, reports and cost estimates.
  • Prepare construction safety and phasing plans and update infrastructure layout plans.
  • Lead client facing engagement sessions centered on technical memoranda.
  • Support / lead large-scale heavy civil engineering projects ensuring collaborators are aligned on roles & responsibilities of the deliverables.
  • Assist with engineering review of permit applications, engineering design plans and specifications, standby plans and engineering contracts.
  • Ensure technical reports and presentations explain research, findings, and recommendations.
  • Collect, compile, and analyze data from various sources for project development, design, and construction.
  • Apply high-level civil engineering techniques and processes to identify improvements for various infrastructure project phases.
  • Perform professional civil engineering work and conduct investigations and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions.
  • Involved from project inception to completion in the management of design and construction of infrastructure projects.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of advanced technologies and design requirements.
  • Coordinate work within the team, lead projects, and be on site as required for meetings with clients and mentoring staff.
  • Remain current in latest structural engineering techniques and practices.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
