About The Position

This position is located in the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), Operations Administration (OA), Roadway Operations & Safety Division, and Roadway Operations Patrol Branch (ROP). The mission of DDOT is to equitably deliver a safe, sustainable and reliable multimodal transportation network for all residents and visitors of the District of Columbia. The Roadway Operation & Safety Division oversees all transportation safety and its infrastructure. The Roadway Operations Patrol Branch operates within the division and specializes in traffic management, as well as reporting crashes and incidents. The Branch assists with the clean-up and removal of accidents and/or redirects traffic zones and special events.

Requirements

  • Specialized experience is an experience that is directly related to the position and has equipped the individual with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, including but not limited to the application of the District Roadway System and highway equipment utilized to clear obstructions from the roadway.
  • To be creditable, the incumbent must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.
  • The incumbent must possess and maintain a valid driver's permit to operate motor vehicles.

Nice To Haves

  • 3 years of performing traffic control at incident scenes and operating communication devices is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols District roadways and bridges in support DDOT and other public agencies at incident scenes; and may be required to operate motorized equipment such as tow trucks.
  • Assists motorists with disabled vehicles, reports abandoned vehicles for removal, and reports/clears debris that impedes traffic operations.
  • Keeps active communication with DDOT's TMC to report events or receive instructions to solve traffic issues as directed by TMC or supervisor(s) from Roadway Operations & Safety Division.
  • Implements temporary traffic control measures to guide or control traffic, safeguard motorists, pedestrians, and property at incident scenes.
  • Coordinates with other agencies (regional, federal, city and local police, fire/rescue, etc.) to determine most efficient means of re-routing traffic and clears incident from the roadway.
  • Balances the workload among employees in accordance with established workflow or job specialization, ensures timely accomplishment of the assigned workload, and in unison with the supervisor, ensures each employee has enough work to remain busy.
  • Remains informed of the status and progress of work and makes daily adjustments, in accordance with established priorities, obtaining assistance from the supervisor for problems that may arise, such as backlogs which cannot be disposed of promptly.
