About The Position

L3Harris is seeking a Lead, Tool Design Engineer to join our team at our growing AMF facility in Huntsville, AL. Manual and semi-automated tooling such as jigs, fixtures, molds, mandrels, and lifting devices are all required in the fabrication and assembly of solid fuel rocket motors. Tool Engineers are responsible to define all of these items. The role of Tool Engineering is mixture of design, structural analysis, project management and hands on manufacturing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 9 years of prior mechanical engineering design experience. A Graduate Degree, or equivalent, with minimum of 7 years prior mechanical engineering design experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior mechanical engineering design experience.
  • 5 years’ experience design of tooling, ground support equipment, or special test equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Creo is strongly preferred.
  • Siemens NX is preferred.
  • Experience with ANSYS is preferred.
  • Fabrication experience is preferred.
  • Composite Wind tool design and/or fabrication experience is preferred.
  • Compression Mold tool design and/or fabrication experience is preferred.
  • Experience working in the defense industry is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Work with cross functional teams define tool requirements.
  • Design using PTC Creo and Windchill in accordance with principles of Design for Manufacturability.
  • Use finite element analysis (FEA) methods and tools to perform structural analysis of tools in order to predict internal stresses and resolve structural instabilities.
  • Lead design reviews with cross functional teams to obtain approval of tool designs.
  • Oversee procurement and fabrication of tooling.
  • Work with Manufacturing Engineers to perform functional evaluations and acceptance of the tooling.
  • Perform liaison support for tool maintenance by identification of tool problems, design of repairs and implementation of modifications.
  • Perform GD&T and complex system tolerance analysis.
  • Ability to obtain a US security clearance.
