About The Position

The Lead I, Packaging Technician is responsible for overseeing the operation of a packaging line and leading operators through their daily tasks and ensuring tasks are performed in accordance with company policy and procedure. The Lead Packaging Technician is responsible for overseeing a team of up to 15 employees, making sure they are trained, adhering to company policies, working safely and achieving departmental standards and goals. This is a working lead position and will work side by side with operators in production.

Requirements

  • Experienced in line changeovers, operating fillers, labelers, case packer and palletizers
  • Experienced in fine tuning equipment to perform at a level of efficiency and quality.
  • Ability to lead team and coordinate daily work assignments, document & use an electronic batch record
  • Ability to manually handle packaging product in a quick, timely manner and safely lift up to 50lbs
  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Good teamwork & communication skills to understand, speak, read, and write in the English language
  • Ability to apply basic math & computer skills – Control Inventory, Outlook, Word, Excel
  • Up to 2 years’ experience in a fast-paced packaging/manufacturing environment
  • Experience in filling out batch records and logbooks
  • Experience working/participating in a team-based environment
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent

Responsibilities

  • Actively promote and maintain a safe work environment, the safety of personnel, and enforce compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations. Promotes the “Safety First” culture within the production department and routinely checks to ensure compliance to all established safe practices.
  • Ensure all packaging line equipment (unscramblers, fillers, labelers, case packers, palletizers, video inkjet machine, cappers, and heat induction machine) are set up and functioning properly for daily operations. Immediately report any equipment issues to the department supervisor or maintenance department.
  • Oversee and lead the basic equipment troubleshooting and fine tuning of equipment during operation to maximize efficiency, ensure safety and quality during operation.
  • Oversee and lead change overs and major cleans on packaging equipment, ensuring efficient and quality change overs.
  • Take ownership of line performance and work with all support departments (QA, Maintenance, Warehouse, Sanitation) to optimize safety, quality, reliability, and performance of the packaging line – “We always do what’s right”
  • Lead, participate, and help coordinate Lean/CI packaging line projects which includes: developing and improving 5s of the packaging line. Ensure current 5s standards are maintained and in compliance. – “We build it better”.
  • Ensure all product and components (bottles, caps, labels, etc.) required for daily production are in the appropriate staging area in a timely manner to ensure availability before production begins.
  • Ensure any remaining product/components are returned back to inventory once a project is completed.
  • Ensure proper inventory control procedures are being followed for issuing packaging components to work orders. Work with warehouse and inventory control for any inventory corrections or inventory accuracy improvements.
  • Ensure all component specifications are correct before packaging begins for lot codes, expiration dates, and labels.
  • Make sure all documentation is complete and correct during all stages of production. This includes checking and verifying all log books are updated and current using good documentation practices (GDP).
  • Complete and send out all required shift reporting and documentation.
  • Perform in process quality inspections on the line to ensure quality performance of packaging line. If defects are found notify QA/supervisor immediately.
  • Inspect and monitor to ensure Electronic Batch Record, Oracle, and equipment log books, and other relevant logs or records are current during all stages of production.
  • Ensure proper use of equipment, housekeeping practices, proper documentation practices, and safety procedures. This includes teaching, training and re-directing operators when necessary.
  • Coordinate and monitor the work of production employees on the packaging line. This includes coordinating and managing rotations of employees through breaks and lunch periods and reporting performance or behavioral issues to Supervisor.
  • Develop a team work approach with your team and between all departments within the plant. Lead by example. – “We work together”.
  • Lead and conduct secondary pass down to ensure proper communication. Keep an open line of communication with all departments, especially other shifts.
  • Develop and update SOPs, work instructions, and one point lessons as needed.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures including safety rules and regulations. Ensure all personnel follow GMPs, safety procedures and written SOPs.
  • Work overtime including weekends as scheduled
  • Assist supervisor with any other task as assigned.
