The Lead Tech - Medical (ASCP) is responsible for the effective coordination and supervision of all functions in the assigned laboratory section or on the assigned shift. This includes scheduling, training, budgeting for cost containment, and recognizing analytical results or problems requiring referral to the Medical Director and Director. The role also involves maintaining policies and procedures, quality control monitoring and practices, proficiency testing, and integrating the assigned section or shift into the overall functioning of the Department and Northwest Texas Healthcare System. Oversight and supervision of section/shift activities must align with established Hospital, Department, and regulatory policies and procedures. The Lead Tech - Medical (ASCP) supports an organizational culture for Service Excellence and practices these standards with all customer groups.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in medical technology, microbiology, biology, chemistry, or related science.
  • Five (5) years of clinical laboratory experience
  • American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Certification Agency (NCA) required.
  • Must meet the personnel requirements as outlined by CLIA ‘88.
  • Mathematical, computer, reasoning and language skills at the undergraduate or graduate level required.
  • Ability to read, write, and converse in English
  • Ability to speak and hear, and effectively communicate to allow discussions with employees, physician, peers, and others
  • Ability to follow instructions, reason, and make appropriate judgments
  • Ability to perform computer functions accurately and quickly
  • Ability to perceive pertinent details and objects in pictorial or graphic form
  • Ability to perceive pertinent details from verbal and tabular material
  • Ability to understand the overall technology, theory, and operation of waived and non-waived instrumentation and analytical reagent systems
  • Ability to perceive similarities and differences in color
  • Ability to understand, formulate, and interpret financial data
  • Ability to understand, perform, and interpret mathematical and statistical operations
  • Ability to formulate, understand, and explain the theories of standards of laboratory practice.

Responsibilities

  • Readily assumes the essential functions (i.e., tasks, duties, and responsibilities) that are critical and/or fundamental to the successful performance of the job.
  • Provides supervisory and technical expertise in the area of assigned responsibility according to accepted laboratory standards of practice as outlined by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), CLIA’88, Joint commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), and American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), and other regulatory agencies, as appropriate, and procedures of the Hospital, department, and/or department’s Medical Director.
  • Participates in maintenance and safety programs.
  • Participates in and supports a process to measure, assess, and improve performance in the area of assigned responsibility.
  • Exhibits effective leadership skills in planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating departmental functions in relation to the UHS and the NWTHS mission, vision, strategic goals, and values and in accordance with JCAHO’s leadership standards.
  • Operates the section or shift of responsibility in such a way as to meet the fiscal goals of the organization.
  • Investigates and submits for implementation value-added programs and services.
  • Manages the satisfaction of Department customers to include patient’s employees and physicians through effective communication and appropriate responsiveness to customer issues.
