About The Position

The Lead Systems Engineer is responsible for defining, designing, and developing system requirements. This role involves performing trade-off analysis of performance, life-cycle cost, risk, producibility, and other system or program requirements. The engineer assesses architecture and current hardware limitations, defines and designs system specifications, and evaluates input/output processes and working parameters for hardware/software compatibility. The position coordinates the design of subsystems and integration of the total system, defines system support requirements, and analyzes and resolves program support deficiencies. Additionally, the engineer conducts independent technical investigations in systems design.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology or Computer Science, or an additional 4 years of relevant work experience in lieu of a Bachelor's degree.
  • 8 years of proven success overseeing the design, development, and implementation of software systems and applications.
  • Broad IBM MQ Administration experience on UNIX and z/OS platforms.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with configuring and managing MQ queue managers and MQ objects.
  • Advanced UNIX/Linux skills, including the ability to write/edit UNIX shell scripts.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide support outside normal office hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools such as Nastel AutoPilot and Dynatrace.
  • Knowledge of programming languages and web-based technologies.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

  • ITIL Foundations v3 certification within 180 days.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, tunes, upgrades, troubleshoots, and maintains all computer systems relevant to the supported applications.
  • Develops and implements techniques to prevent system problems and supports root cause analysis.
  • Evaluates new systems by performing in-depth tests, including end-user reviews.
  • Researches software and related products to support recommendations and purchasing.
  • Determines systems integration issues by evaluating components and developing performance tests.
  • Implements system automation and integration of business processes.
  • Acts as a mentor for junior and senior team members.
  • Installs, maintains, and monitors IBM MQ software across CareFirst platforms.
  • Works with the CareFirst mainframe team and external partners to establish and maintain MQ connectivity.
  • Creates and maintains MQ objects in support of applications and resolves MQ connectivity problems.
  • Provides support and basic troubleshooting of Artemis MQ and RabbitMQ systems.
  • Handles 24x7 on-call responsibilities for application or infrastructure issues.
