The Lead Systems Engineer - Diagnostics defines and drives the diagnostic architecture across embedded automotive platforms. You will drive the strategy for fault detection and reporting (DTCs, Freeze Frames) on-board communications (CAN, UDS, J1979/J1939), and interface control - translating product goals into clear, testable system requirements. You will guide cross-functional teams through design reviews, FMEAs, and integration to ensure robust coverage, traceability, and release readiness.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, Software, Mechatronics, Systems Engineering or related field.
  • 7+ years in embedded control systems with proven experience in diagnostics and systems engineering.
  • Proficiency with CAN, UDS, J1979/J1939, and diagnostic data design.
  • Strong systems experience - requirements, ICDs, FMEAs, traceability, test coverage.
  • Effective cross-functional leadership; strong communication and coordination skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Master s degree in engineering or related field.
  • Hands-on experience with engine tuning, calibration tools, or dyno/vehicle testing.
  • Familiarity with CAN, UDS, and other automotive communication protocols.
  • Experience with diagnostic architecture, system modeling.
  • Experience with OBD compliance (EPA/CARB), and other regulatory compliance (ISO, UL, etc.).
  • Knowledge of Internal Combustion Engine fundamentals and Engine Management Systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead diagnostic systems architecture and Interface Control Documents for ECUs and embedded modules.
  • Define requirements for DTC strategy, service implementation, OBD-II/J1979 behaviors, and failure mode logic.
  • Host technical discussions/design revies; drive FMEAs and ensure requirements to test traceability.
  • Plan and execute complex diagnostic deliverables from concept through validation and release. Manage field updates.
  • Calibrate diagnostic thresholds and ensure successful feature integration.
  • Partner with embedded software, validation, and hardware teams to align features, thresholds, and test coverage.
  • Build and maintain diagnostic test plans, scripts, and acceptance criteria; analyze data and coverage results.
  • Mentor systems engineers, review work products, and manage change control.
  • Balance innovation with pragmatic solutions; document decisions and risks clearly for stakeholders.
  • Lead root-cause analysis of field/service/manufacturing/design issues.
