About The Position

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (Children’s) and Emory University School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics (DOP) are seeking a visionary and collaborative physician medical-education leader with strong clinical skills , excellent academic scholarship, and educational experience to serve in the new role of Lead System Fellowship Director at Children’s and DOP. The Lead Systems Fellowship Director will report directly to the Chief Teaching Officer/Vice Chair of Education In partnership with all medical and surgical fellowship program leaders (i.e., program directors, associate program directors, and program coordinators), the Director will support individual program strength, growth, and optimization. This role involves working closely with all medical and surgical fellowship program directors, associate program directors, and program coordinators and reports directly to the Chief Teaching Officer/Vice-Chair of Education. The individual in this position will be responsible for supporting the strength, growth and optimization of all the medical and surgical fellowship programs at Children’s and DOP, ensuring the highest standard in pediatric training of medical and surgical fellows is maintained at Emory and elevates the culture of teaching and learning at Children’s. The Lead Systems Fellowship Director will facilitate the integration of the latest teaching methodologies and evidence-based training as well as providing support, inspiration and oversight for advancing up-to-date curricula and assessment consistent with ACGME guidelines to ensure our fellowship training programs remain at the forefront of medical education. Additionally, this role will collaborate with institutional and external stakeholders to ensure training initiatives align with accreditation standards, advance best practices, and deliver high quality education. Employment will be in the Emory + Children's Pediatric Institute. Responsibilities

  • Develops vision and strategy for expanding and leading all fellowship education programs, including:
  • Ensures the DOP maintains the highest standard in training medical and surgical fellows. Elevates the culture of teaching and learning at Children’s.
  • Leads the development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of a centralized fellowship core curriculum to ensure consistency, efficiency, and alignment with ACGME and medical board requirements.
  • Promotes visibility of fellowship programs across DOP and Children’s, helping to break down training silos and enhance community among fellows and fellowship leaders.
  • Works collaboratively with the DOP Chair and Division Chiefs, Children’s Division Chiefs, and the Chief Teaching Officer/Vice-Chair of Education to align academic priorities and educational initiatives for fellowship trainees. Serves as the primary point of contact for fellowship-level issues, allowing the Chief Teaching Officer/Vice-Chair of Education to focus on broader departmental educational strategy.
  • Oversees and supports the ongoing implementation of quality improvement programs to ensure they meet external regulations and national accreditation standards.
  • Mentors fellowship directors who need assistance in meeting ACGME requirements.
  • Centralizes shared educational resources, processes, and documents for efficiency and equity across all fellowship programs with specific attention to equitable distribution of teaching resources across fellowship programs.
  • Conducts programmatic reviews and oversees faculty who serve as program directors, assistant program directors, core faculty, and members of required committees of ACGME-accredited fellowship training programs.
  • Provides structured faculty development, mentorship, and onboarding for fellowship program directors, including professional development pathways. Encourages fellowship program directors and educational leaders in career growth such as pursuing medical education scholarships, certification programs, and/or leadership development.
  • Oversees the evaluation strategy for fellowship educational programs, ensuring that programmatic goals and professional standards are met, including synthesizing program-level evaluation data, ACGME survey trends, and outcomes to identify opportunities for improvement and advocacy.
  • Monitors fellow evaluation of teaching faculty members; provides regular feedback and counseling to individual teaching faculty, including adjunct faculty, as needed, and requested by the Chief Teaching Officer/Vice-Chair of Education.
  • Advises on faculty or trainee performance concerns and assists in developing remediation pathways in collaboration with fellowship program directors and GME leadership.
  • Assists the Chief Teaching Officer/Vice-Chair of Education in the assignment of faculty teaching time to promote excellence in all teaching programs and advance educational skills for our teaching faculty in the Department of Pediatrics, with specific attention to equitable distribution of teaching resources across fellowship programs.
  • Collate summative teaching evaluations to the departmental promotions committee as requested by the Chief Teaching Officer/Vice-Chair of Education.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Teaching Officer/Vice-Chair of Education to establish appropriate training and faculty development modules to build teaching and administration skills for faculty.
  • Leads fellowship-specific educational innovation initiatives (e.g., competency-based assessment tools, EPA implementation) and disseminates best practices across fellowship programs
  • Encourages fellowship program directors and educational leaders in pursuing medical education scholarships, certification programs, and/or leadership development.
  • Facilitates community-building activities among fellowship program directors, fellows, and coordinators to reduce isolation and enhance departmental cohesiveness.
  • Prepares, presents, and reviews fellowship educational status reports and issues and reports monthly to the Chief Teaching Officer/Vice-Chair of Education.
  • Participates in the training of medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty and in the educational programs of the department.
  • Liaises with potential external academic partners to integrate new fellowship training programs into Children’s. Works directly with Children’s Academic Administration, Emory Executive Administrator, Chief Teaching Officer/Vice-Chair of Education, relevant Division Chiefs, relevant Department Chairs, and their administrative partners to operationalize new fellowship training programs.
  • Partners with Children’s learning team to leverage and share educational tools and models, where appropriate.
  • Works with the Chief Teaching Officer/Vice-Chair of Education and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics to develop, maintain and administer philanthropic funding to support educational activities across Children’s.
  • Oversees the budget for fellowship-level educational programs in partnership with the Vice President of Research and Academic Administration (Children’s), the Executive Administrator and Emory Executive Administrator and Vice Chair for Administration for Department of Pediatrics and the Pediatric Institute and the Chief Teaching Officer/Vice-Chair of Education.
  • Ensures adequate administrative support for fellowship programs, advocating for coordinator FTE proportional to departmental needs in alignment with ACGME requirements.
  • Works with community partners, statewide pediatric training programs, and leaders at Children’s and Emory to ensure sufficient training sites to meet requirements, including active participation in regional and national GME networks to bring best practices back to the departments.
  • Leads shared recruitment initiatives including maintenance of shared marketing/digital resources and departmental recruiting initiatives. Ensures equitable recruitment practices across fellowship programs providing guidance to program directors and associate program directors on best practices. In partnership with the fellowship coordinator, is responsible for fellowship orientation to the Department of Pediatrics and Children’s.
