About The Position

The Lead Swim Instructor is a seasonal position. We offer competitive compensation, and PTO for seasonal employees. Job Purpose: Under the direction of the Swim Coordinator, the position of Lead Swim Instructor acts as a role model for participants and is responsible for providing instruction, direction, and safety to students in Swim Academy. This position is also responsible for assisting with all other Swim Academy functions.

Requirements

  • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age by June 1st of the summer they are working.
  • High School Diploma or GED required. Some college preferred.
  • Must have previous experience as a Starfish Swim Instructor
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Previous swim team experience required.
  • Starfish Swim Instructor, or able to obtain within one year.
  • Ability to work within program time frames.
  • Enthusiasm towards various age and skill ranges.
  • Ability to verbally communicate and physically demonstrate instructions and skills to students.
  • Must have the ability to solve problems as they arise and able to perform tasks without supervision.
  • Exhibit willingness to accept and apply feedback.
  • Certification in advanced Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) within 1 month of employment and keep certification current. The District provides this training.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with learn to swim staff training during pre-season and throughout the season.
  • Assist in the supervision of swim instructors, ensuring they are following lesson plans, teaching in a positive manner, and maintaining paperwork by performing observations.
  • Provide constructive direction through observation, ongoing evaluation, mentoring, and progressive discipline when required.
  • Manage learn to swim staff attendance, rotation, breaks, and assignments.
  • Act as a substitute for absent staff, work with the Learn to Swim Coordinator to find replacements for unassigned shifts, and provide discipline as necessary.
  • Work with the Learn to Swim Coordinator to maintain appropriate staffing levels and send staff home as necessary.
  • Complete all required paperwork as needed.
  • Maintain a complete understanding of Park District emergency action plans and take the lead in the execution of those plans when required. Act as a leader in emergency procedure implementation and building evacuation.
  • Understand and embrace the structure of the Swim Academy, and follow all guidelines required for swim instructors.
  • Represent the program, facilities and Park District in a positive, respectful manner.
  • Provide a safe and positive learning environment for the participants.
  • Create lesson plans and coach the Oak Park Masters Swim Program, teaching high quality technique.
  • Complete attendance records and statistics records for the Oak Park Masters Swim Program.
  • Use terminology for skill work as described by the program to reinforce consistency between classes and coaches.
  • Adhere to the policies, procedures and expectations set forth by the program and Park District including (but not limited to), class start and end times, attendance requirements, and paperwork requirements.
  • Become familiar with participants and parents; know their names, personalities, skills, and interests.
  • Provide excellent customer service and maintain a positive public image by addressing questions and concerns from staff, patrons, participants, and parents immediately.
  • Keep program supplies, equipment, and facility space clean, organized, and safe.
  • Report any policy or procedure violations by staff immediately to the Swim Coordinator or Aquatic Program Supervisor.
  • Assist with additional events and tasks as needed.
  • Promote teamwork and safety among coaches and participants.
  • Attend staff meetings and training programs as specified.
  • Bring all concerns and problems to the Swim Coordinator.
  • Know all emergency action plans and execute plans properly as needed.
