The Lead Surgical Technologist /First Assist provides care to the surgical patient in collaboration with the surgical team.

Requirements

  • Certification as a Surgical First Assistant by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
  • Graduate of an accredited program of surgical technology under the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT), or current certification through National board of Surgical Technology and/or Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or a Military Exception will be given to those who graduated from a military Surgical Technology (Operating Room Technologist) program who would be considered grandfathered in.
  • 10+ years successful surgical technician experience in perioperative or surgical setting
  • BLS Required
  • Possess the ability to communicate with a variety of people in a direct, empathetic, and articulate manner
  • Comprehensive understanding of surgical processes and procedures

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience as First Assist in the OR with emphasis on orthopedic cases
  • Good working knowledge of Orthopedics and General Surgery preferred

Responsibilities

  • Function as First Assist for the surgeons as needed
  • First Assist shall always provide only those professional services that First Assist is qualified to deliver.
  • First Assist shall perform administrative duties related to patient care.
  • First Assist shall cooperate and comply with the policies and procedures of WCH, including those which are pertinent to patient relations, quality assurance, scheduling, billing, collections and other administrative matters.
  • Support the goal of expanding surgical services within the community and support the growth of surgical volume.
  • Participate in the education and quality of the surgical staff and promote an enhanced team approach to patient care in all services of surgical services.
  • Uphold the WCH Code of Conduct and ethical behavior in the clinical workspace.
  • Provide input with decisions related to quality and safety of the care of the patient in the surgical environment.
  • Promote and support staff to adopt and embody a stronger skill set related to services excellence and quality outcomes.
  • Promote teamwork and blame free culture to learn and grow within all service lines in surgical services.
  • Participate in new technology and support education related to new equipment and new procedures for all surgeons withing at WCH.
  • Participate in the daily case line-up to enhance efficiency and the allocation of resources to support safety and efficiency with all the service lines in the surgical unit.
  • Proactively coordinate with vendors and surgeons to manage limited resources that support the over OR schedule and flow of the patients throughout their surgical experience.
  • Participate in administrative needs such as preference card management, product evaluation, trials, and orientation of new staff to these elements emerging in the OR environment.
  • Functions as a member of the surgical team as directed by the nurse and physician utilizing knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, surgical instrumentation, and technology to enhance patient care.
  • Performs terminal cleans, assists the nurse and physicians with positioning of the patient, patient transport, and room turnover consistently applying sterile and aseptic techniques. Ensures the operating room is stocked and expiration dates are verified for each case.
  • Reprocesses and sterilizes instruments as needed.
  • Ensures the operating room is stocked for each case.
  • Participates in accounting for all surgical instrumentation before and after each case.
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Supports the patient and surgical team by adapting to unpredictable situations within the perioperative setting, supporting the process wherever needed.
