The Lead Structural Engineer at Metra plays a crucial role in overseeing the design and construction of capital projects within one of North America's largest and most complex commuter rail systems. This position is responsible for managing complex structural engineering projects, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and municipal codes, and maintaining high engineering standards. The Lead Structural Engineer will draft scopes of work and independent cost estimates for design work performed by consultants, review design plans and specifications, and negotiate project details to ensure successful outcomes. In addition to project management, the Lead Structural Engineer will represent the department as a subject matter expert, providing training and technical oversight to other staff members. This role requires collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in compliance with corporate quality standards and Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) guidelines. The engineer will maintain detailed records on project status, including schedules, costs, and design changes, and will prepare work reports and memoranda detailing assessments of design reviews. Safety is a top priority, and the Lead Structural Engineer will promote safe work practices and maintain a safe work environment, working under various environmental conditions. This position reports directly to the Director of Civil and Structural Design and is integral to the successful execution of Metra's capital programs, procedures, and policies.
