About The Position

Under the direction of the Chief/Deputy Chief of the Department of Safety Services, the Lead Specialist will serve as a pro-active member of the leadership team, and will be assigned as a building-based supervisor, or a Mobile Unit supervisor. The Lead Specialist will assist in maintaining a safe and secure environment in school buildings and grounds in collaboration with school safety teams and administrators. The Lead Specialist will work with all ranks of Safety Specialists, school leaders and staff, and internal and external partners proactively, to ensure that all established safety protocols are being followed consistently, and will exercise appropriate safety and law enforcement procedures.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Current BPS employee of the Department of Safety Services, possessing a rank of former Sergeant in good standing with the Department
  • Six years of experience with the Department of Safety Services.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and access to a motor vehicle for daily use.
  • Knowledge of the Boston Public Schools’ policies, procedures, practices, and neighborhoods.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States (candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment).

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of three years supervisory experience as a Sergeant with the Department of Safety Services.
  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree or working towards obtaining a degree.

Responsibilities

  • Takes appropriate action in the event of a disturbance or incident as directed by the Principal, Headmaster, or the Chief/Deputy Chief of the Department of Safety Services , in accordance with the building safety plan and Department of Safety Services protocol and procedures.
  • Observes and reports any potential problem in school buildings and grounds, taking appropriate action as necessary.
  • Submits written reports as required by the Department of Safety Services.
  • Conduct routine pro-active site visits to schools, as determined by the Chief/Deputy Chief of the Department of Safety Services, to conduct safety walk-throughs, communicate with school administrators, and support the proper implementation of all safety services.
  • Serves on emergency school support team as directed by the Chief/Deputy Chief of Safety Services
  • Investigates incidents as directed.
  • Assists in supervision of student movement in and out of school buildings and grounds, including school parking area, in school yard before school, at recess, at dismissal and when students are boarding or leaving buses.
  • Provides technical assistance in areas of safety and security to school administrators.
  • Assists School Department personnel, students, and parents with the court process.
  • Successfully completes all professional development and training programs as required by the Department of Safety Services.
  • If assigned as a Mobile Unit, conduct school site visits to promote proactive communication between Specialists, school leaders, safety teams, and staff.
  • Establish and maintain a positive and productive relationship with all BPD School Unit officers and work collaboratively on all incidents and prevention/intervention strategies to promote school safety across the district.
  • Conduct field supervision of all Specialists ranks.
  • Complete appropriate evaluations of Senior Specialists, as directed by the Chief/Deputy Chief of Safety Services.
