Gravie is looking for an experienced Lead Software Engineer to serve as the technical anchor for an engineering team that supports Gravie’s customer and member web portals. The ideal candidate has deep and broad engineering skills and can stand up an architecture in its entirety on their own, but chooses to influence a wider team by acting as a 'force multiplier.' This role involves working with both server and client-side technologies, possessing a good mixture of DevOps and application development skills, and building forward-thinking and innovative solutions with experienced teammates. The Lead Software Engineer will be responsible for building performant, easy to use, well monitored and well tested APIs, creating and maintaining robust web applications, designing efficient data flows, communicating clearly, sharing knowledge, and questioning existing solutions.

  • Lead the design, development, and delivery of product features and services that delight Gravie’s customers and members.
  • Drive engineering excellence via code reviews, architectural guidance, and hands-on mentorship.
  • Foster a high-performing team culture grounded in collaboration, continuous learning, and accountability.
  • Help evolve our CI/CD processes toward continuous delivery, with an emphasis on fast, safe, high-quality deployments.
  • Oversee production health of the services your team owns and implement improvements to minimize incidents.
  • Provide technical leadership for key initiatives in our financial and customer experience technology stacks.
  • Champion the thoughtful adoption of AI-driven development tools, including best practices for integrating tools like Claude Code.
  • Be a role model of Gravie’s core values—authenticity, curiosity, creativity, empathy, and outcomes focus.
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • 7+ years of hands-on software development experience, with a strong track record leading teams and delivering consumer-facing products.
  • Experience working across the full stack, with both front-end and back-end technologies.
  • Proficiency in languages such as Java, Kotlin, Groovy/Grails, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, and Clojure/ClojureScript (preferable) or another functional programming language.
  • Experience with frameworks like React, Ember, Vue.js, or AngularJS.
  • Knowledge of cloud/DevOps technologies such as AWS (Lambda, CDK, Serverless), Docker, Terraform, etc.
  • Experience with databases like MySQL, other SQL/NoSQL stores, and messaging systems.
  • Solid understanding of CI/CD practices, test automation, DevOps, and modern software delivery.
  • Demonstrated success in mentoring engineers, leading cross-functional projects, and improving delivery performance.
  • Clear, confident communication and a desire to collaborate across disciplines, including Product, Design, and QA.
  • Experience in the health insurance or benefits industry (e.g., claims processing, ICHRA, enrollment systems).
  • Experience with AI-assisted development and integrating tools like Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar.
  • Contributions to open-source projects or a strong GitHub presence.
  • Prior experience in a startup or fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • Passion for engineering culture, continuous improvement, and shaping team norms.
  • Standard health and wellness benefits.
  • Alternative medicine coverage.
  • Flexible PTO.
  • Up to 16 weeks paid parental leave.
  • Paid holidays.
  • 401k program.
  • Cell phone reimbursement.
  • Transportation perks.
  • Education reimbursement.
  • 1 week of paid paw-ternity leave.
