About The Position

This examination is being given to fill one Lead Senior Registered Environmental Health Specialist vacancy in the Environmental Health department and to establish an eligible list to fill future vacancies. Requirements

  • Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with course work in sciences and mathematics as prescribed by Section 116600-106735, all inclusive, of the California Health and Safety Code.
  • Two years of increasingly responsible experience performing the duties of a Registered Environmental Health Specialist in a California public health agency.
  • Possession of a valid certificate as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist issued by the California Department of Health Services.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.

Nice To Haves

  • A master's degree in chemistry, physics, biology, microbiology, public health, or a closely related field can substitute for six months of the required experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in supervising staff; assigns and reviews work, trains staff, acts in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Conducts inspections and investigations to determine environmental health problems; determines need for corrective action and provides appropriate assistance.
  • Conducts surveys and collects data; handles more comprehensive or complex assignments or those providing special or unique difficulties and calling for individualized actions.
  • Enforces and secures compliance with federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, regulations and standards in the area of environmental health.
  • Inspects food handling and processing establishments, land use applications, public swimming pools and spas, substandard housing, well systems, small public water systems, on-site wastewater treatment and disposal systems, underground storage tank facilities, hazardous waste generator facilities, and other environmental health programs; performs emergency response services.
  • Reviews and approves plans for installation of on-site wastewater treatment and disposal systems, well systems, underground storage tanks, public swimming pools, food establishments, small public water systems and other related environmental health installations.
  • Investigates complaints of nuisances such as vector problems, waste disposal and other unsanitary conditions; gathers facts, collects samples and prescribes abatement and control measures.
  • Inspects chemical and hazardous waste storage facilities and investigates hazardous material spills.
  • Gathers, organizes and analyzes technical data and prepares appropriate reports utilizing computers and computer software programs; maintains specialized records; prepares correspondence.
  • Interprets environmental health laws and regulations to contractors, public and private officials and the general public; makes presentation to various interest groups.
  • Provides information for the preparation of billing statements, issues environmental health permits and collects fees.
  • May assist in the training of staff.
