About The Position

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff is an 1890 Land-Grant HBCU. This position is for a Lead Residential Counselor within the Upward Bound Department. The role involves coordinating daily activities of Residential Counselors and Overnight Counselors, ensuring the safety, well-being, and supervision of students residing in the Summer Residential Program. The Lead Residential Counselor will enforce program rules, curfew policies, and residential guidelines, and conduct regular meetings with residential staff. They will also assist with the coordination and planning of evening enrichment activities, leadership development sessions, and student engagement opportunities. This role serves as the primary point of contact for residential incidents or concerns during program hours, maintains documentation of student conduct, incidents, and residential activities, and assists with student check-in, orientation, and move-in/move-out procedures. The Lead Residential Counselor will work collaboratively with program administrators, instructors, and support staff to ensure the success of the residential component. Additionally, they will provide mentorship and guidance to students to support personal growth, leadership development, and college readiness, assist with emergency response procedures, and promote a respectful, inclusive, and positive residential environment that reflects the mission of the TRIO Upward Bound Program. This is a temporary (fixed term) position.

Requirements

  • Must be a currently enrolled college student or recent college graduate in good academic standing.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to supervise and support a team of residential counselors.
  • Ability to handle conflict resolution and emergency situations in a professional manner.
  • Ability to enforce policies while maintaining a supportive and positive environment.
  • Must pass all required background checks in accordance with university and federal program guidelines.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred majors include Education, Counseling, Social Work, Student Affairs, Psychology, or a related field, but other majors may be considered.
  • Prior experience working with high school students, youth programs, mentoring programs, or summer camps preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in student organizations, mentoring, tutoring, or youth development activities.
