About The Position

The Quality Control Lead for Mechanical and Plumbing is responsible for ensuring that the highest standards of quality and code compliance are upheld throughout all phases of mechanical and plumbing system implementation on the project. This position requires daily on-site engagement, including pre-inspections, verification of installation and testing, and thorough documentation to ensure compliance with the project's contract documents, specifications, and applicable codes and standards. The Quality Control Specialist will represent Hensel Phelps and our mechanical and plumbing trade partners in coordination with the owner's inspection staff and Authorities Having Jurisdiction to schedule and conduct inspections, resolve issues, and verify corrective actions through direct field verification and proper documentation. This individual will be involved in all phases of the work, from startup and installation to testing, inspection, and final turnover, while maintaining detailed daily reports submitted to the Quality Control Manager. The role also supports the implementation of the Hensel Phelps six-step quality and safety process, participates in preparatory meetings, coordinates third-party inspections, and audits trade partner quality procedures. This position plays a critical role in maintaining quality standards, supporting issue resolution, and ensuring the successful delivery of the project.

Requirements

  • Preferred: A 4-year degree in architecture or construction management, Mechanical Engineering, or similar experience in a related position.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in Quality Control, installation, and inspection of mechanical and plumbing systems on large commercial construction projects.
  • Must be technically experienced and capable of understanding specifications, standards, and code requirements related to mechanical and plumbing disciplines.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Computer software - Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel based templates, Prolog, Primavera and AutoCAD.

Responsibilities

  • Interface daily with plumbing and mechanical trade partners, the owner's inspection staff, and applicable Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) to ensure all work complies with the project's contract documents, specifications, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Conduct daily on-site pre-inspections of mechanical and plumbing work scopes to verify that installation and testing requirements are being met in accordance with project specifications, quality standards, and applicable codes through to completion.
  • Collaborate with mechanical and plumbing trade partners to actively participate in issue resolution, ensuring timely identification, communication, and closure of field-related challenges to maintain project schedule and quality standards.
  • Proactively identify field issues related to mechanical and plumbing systems and track all deficiencies noted by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). Verify that all corrective actions have been completed through direct field verification and maintain thorough documentation of issue resolution and compliance.
  • Participate actively in all phases of mechanical and plumbing system implementation, including startup, material verification, full installation, system testing, and inspection processes. Ensure all work is performed in accordance with the contract documents, project specifications, and all applicable codes and standards through completion of their scope of work.
  • Provide daily reports to the Quality Control Manager detailing inspection activities, issue tracking and resolution status, coordination activities with trade partners and AHJs, and overall compliance with contract documents, project specifications, and applicable codes.
  • Support and participate in shop fabrication and inspection visits as necessary to ensure that mechanical and plumbing systems are fabricated in compliance with project specifications, quality standards, and applicable codes prior to installation.
  • Participate in the start-up, final testing and commissioning of the mechanical and plumbing systems.
  • Participate in the start-up and implementation of the six-step quality control/safety process for the mechanical and plumbing scope of work. This includes the start-up and implementation of the site-specific quality program to include the quality control plan, quality process log, test register and quality point files. Participate in the weekly QC meetings and trade partner foreman meeting as directed by the QC Manager.
  • Assist with the development of the preparatory meeting agendas and participate in the preparatory meeting prior to the start of the mechanical and plumbing definable feature of work. Review and maintain the project quality process log (QPL).
  • Interface directly with owner's quality assurance and management on all quality-related issues.
  • Review and participate in all mechanical and plumbing initial and follow-up inspection reports, and close-in inspection results.
  • Be fully aware of the contract, plans, specifications and applicable codes.
  • Receive trade partner test and inspection requests and produce a coordinated test and inspection schedule.
  • Document and submit a daily report of quality control activity for the mechanical and plumbing scope of work.
  • Audit the mechanical and plumbing scope of work trade partner quality control procedures. Report chronic problems with trade partner work or quality control programs to upper management.
  • Participate in the selection process for outside testing contractors and verify adherence to testing standards, frequency and documentation. Coordinate third party testing agency activities with Hensel Phelps and the mechanical and plumbing scope of work trade partners. Coordinate and schedule for source inspections.
