Job Summary The Lead Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner supervises a staff of psychiatric nurse practitioners across MN Adult & Teen Challenge (“MnTC”) programs to support individuals with substance use disorders, withdrawal needs and co-occurring mental health conditions by ensuring assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care management meets established medical and regulatory standards. This position collaborates with physicians, psychiatrists, and a multidisciplinary care team to ensure consistent, high-quality, integrated patient care and alignment with the MnTC treatment model. The Lead Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner provides direct patient care as a psychiatric nurse practitioner including substance use evaluations, psychiatric assessments, medication management, withdrawal management support, and treatment of co-occurring medical conditions.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Advanced Practice Nursing.
  • Active, unrestricted license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in Minnesota.
  • Active, unrestricted license as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) in Minnesota.
  • Board certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC), consistent with scope of practice under Minnesota Statutes 245I.04.
  • At least 3 years of experience as a licensed Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.
  • At least 5 years of clinical experience in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry.
  • At least 3 years of experience in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and/or withdrawal management settings.
  • Current DEA registration and authorization to prescribe controlled substances.
  • Eligibility to prescribe buprenorphine in accordance with federal guidelines.
  • Staff management experience, preferred
  • Familiarity with harm reduction principles and trauma-informed care approaches.
  • Strong clinical supervision, assessment and diagnostic skills in psychiatric and addiction medicine
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to effectively manage time.
  • Strong communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills to work with patients, staff, and leadership.
  • Comfort and compassion in working with individuals facing life-controlling challenges, such as mental health issues and addiction.

  • At least 1 year of freedom from problematic substances.
  • Must be able to meet specific provider qualifications and scope of practice outlined in Minnesota Statutes 245I.04. Reference: Sec. 245I.04 MN Statutes
  • Must pass a DHS background study as required under MN Statutes, Chapter 245C and 245G.

Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical supervision and consultation and oversee performance of licensed psychiatric nurse practitioners and preceptorships statewide.
  • Consult with program leadership to collaborate on the clinical direction for multidisciplinary staff regarding the psychiatric and medical needs of patients, including the biological aspects of mental health conditions.
  • Ensure all members of the PNP team communicate and collaborate with internal and external staff in a way that supports the MnTC Culture of Honor.
  • Provide clinical support and consultation to MnTC’s 245F Withdrawal Management program.
  • Manage selection process for new hires to the department including interviewing and selection decisions in partnership with talent acquisition and onboarding new hires to the team.
  • Set staff performance expectations, coach and train staff, conduct performance reviews.
  • Manage psychiatric and withdrawal management service policies recommending changes for approval by medical director and SVP Clinical Services. Design and implement procedures and protocols for approved policies.
  • Maintain updated policies, procedures and protocols for compliance with licensing agencies.
  • Ensure patient and staff safety, medical and regulatory standards are met.
  • Remain up-to-date on changes, research and best practices in the field to improve patient care.
  • Stay compliant with all required MnTC and DHS training.
  • The Lead PMHNP will serve as the primary clinical mentor/supervisor for postgraduate PMHNP staff. This role includes managing the 2,080-hour Collaborative Practice Agreement transition for new APRNs as required by the Minnesota Board of Nursing, ensuring clinical excellence and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide clinical oversight of withdrawal management and associated medical conditions, ensuring safe and appropriate care.
  • Review complex medical cases, prescribing practices, referrals and diagnostic strategies.
  • Maintain availability for clinical oversight and real-time consultation as needed.
  • Responsible for providing 24 hours of billable services per week – unless modified by the Senior Vice President, Clinical Services.
  • Complete admission medical history and physical examination within 24 hours of patient admission, in accordance with program and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct comprehensive diagnostic assessments, including mental status examinations, substance use history, and risk assessments, to determine the presence of mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Diagnose and treat mental health and substance use disorders in accordance with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5-TR) criteria and applicable Minnesota Statutes.
  • Identify and manage co-occurring mental health and substance use/addiction disorders.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee individualized treatment plans that address both psychiatric and substance use needs, ensuring medical necessity and clinical appropriateness.
  • Provide medication management services, including prescribing, administering, and monitoring psychiatric medications and controlled substances in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Order, interpret, and manage laboratory and diagnostic testing to support clinical decision making and ongoing treatment.
  • Assess and diagnose mental disorders in individuals referred to treat specified mental disorders and provide consultation services to clinical staff.
  • Coordinate care with internal and external providers to ensure continuity of care and appropriate referrals when services are outside the program scope.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary treatment team to support integrated treatment plans, care and positive patient outcomes.
  • Educate patients, families, and staff regarding psychiatric conditions, substance use disorders, medications, and overall health and wellness.
  • Ensure that patients and families are fully informed about the treatment plan and care.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in the electronic health record, including diagnostic assessments, treatment plans, medication management, and progress notes, in accordance with 245G and 245I requirements and relevant Minnesota Statutes.
  • Ensure compliance with prescribing regulations, medication management, withdrawal management protocols, and documentation standards.
  • Participate in on-call coverage as required to support continuity of medical and psychiatric care.
  • Provide treatment services in accordance with Minnesota Statue 245G.10, Subdivision 3, while understanding that admission, transfer or discharge of clients falls outside of their responsibility.
  • Maintain thorough understanding of client rights as specified in Minnesota Statute 148F.165, along with the responsibilities associated with their role.
