This limited term position supports the Youth and Family Services Bureau (YFSB) in the Police Department to strengthen and enhance services provided to Hayward families to keep youth positively engaged in the community and out of the juvenile justice system. The Lead Program Assistant works with YSFB mental health counselors to provide case management, life skills training, diversion, restorative justice, and other services. The limited term position is dependent on ongoing funding for the program. Funding has already been secured through FY2026 (June 30, 2026) with the possibility of an extension or permanent funding in FY 2027. The Lead Program Assistant is a Citywide classification; current vacancies exist in the Police Department however future citywide vacancies may be filled from this recruitment.

  • Work with supervisors to identify community needs and opportunities and design programs to fill those needs and achieve identified program outcomes.
  • Under direction, develop and implement policies and procedures for implementing various education, community and volunteer programs to assist youth.
  • Under direction, represent program to the public through public service announcements, classes, workshops, events and presentations.
  • Maintain systems for tracking activities and performance measures.
  • Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
  • Two (2) years of experience equivalent to the Library Program Assistant or two (2) years progressively responsible experience in case management, education/tutoring program coordination, customer service, project management or similar field.
  • Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in Humanities, Social Sciences, Counseling, Education or a closely related field.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Class C Driver's License.
  • Preferably have experiences living or working in Hayward and/or Alameda County.
  • Preferably bilingual in Spanish but not required.
