Lead Product Designer, Developer Tooling AI

AtlassianSeattle, WA
82d$157,500 - $246,750

About The Position

Atlassians can choose where they work – whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. That way, Atlassians have more control over supporting their family, personal goals, and other priorities. We can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity. Interviews and onboarding are conducted virtually, a part of being a distributed-first company. This role will help Atlassian redefine software practice in an AI-native world. To that end, this Lead Designer will work with design, product and engineering leadership to envision how AI can transform key elements of the software-development life-cycle (SDLC), working with product managers and engineers to transform that vision into reality. The ideal candidate will have experience designing tools for developers and/or across the SDLC as well as experience designing AI-powered features or products. The ideal candidate is a blend of technical depth with systems thinking, yet someone who obsesses over design details.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of product design experience with a focus on complex workflows, products, or systems
  • Compelling portfolio demonstrating craft through concrete examples that solved complex challenges and highlight meaningful outcomes
  • Technical understanding of how developers work and think, whether through coding experience or close collaboration with engineering teams
  • Experience working on developer tools, technical products, or similarly complex domains, with a strong understanding of software development concepts
  • Ability to articulate thinking and design decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Adaptability in evolving environments, with the ability to adjust approach as new information emerges

Responsibilities

  • Craft exceptional developer experiences: Design intuitive, efficient workflows that remove friction and streamline the software development lifecycle
  • Enhance workflows with AI: Identify opportunities where AI can transform tedious tasks or provide assistance, positioning it as a natural extension of the developer's toolkit
  • Prototype solutions: Create working concepts using your preferred tools—whether design software, front-end code, or AI-assisted development—to effectively communicate concepts and vision
  • Own the end-to-end process: Drive the design process from problem definition to final implementation for complex developer tools and AI-powered enhancements.
  • Partner with product and engineering: Collaborate closely with product to define problems and success metrics, and with engineering to work through constraints while ensuring we deliver a high-quality experience to customers
  • Understand and advocate for developers: Deeply research developer workflows and pain points, bringing their perspective into design decisions and ensuring solutions truly solve their problems
  • Balance technical and user needs: Find the sweet spot between technical constraints, AI capabilities, and user needs to create practical but impactful solutions
  • Translate complexity into clarity: Simplify complex technical concepts into intuitive interfaces that feel natural and effortless to use, whether they involve AI or traditional interactions
  • Iterate based on feedback: Continuously refine your designs through usability testing, developer feedback, and usage metrics to create increasingly effective solutions

Benefits

  • Health and wellbeing resources
  • Paid volunteer days
  • Equitable, explainable, and competitive compensation programs
  • Eligibility for benefits, bonuses, commissions, and equity
