About The Position

The Lead Plant Mechanic position is part of the Plant Industrial Trades Series, devoted to skilled trades work in the construction, alteration and repair of utility plant facilities and equipment. Responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of chemical feed systems and equipment supporting the operations of a large-scale water treatment and pumping facility, this role performs a variety of mechanical, facilities and grounds maintenance work at assigned plants or remote sites. Key responsibilities include troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical related issues via inspecting, maintaining, repairing or replacing pumps, valves and meters critical to water treatment, distribution, and pumping processes. Work orders and scheduling for inspecting water treatment plants and remote sites are handled through our Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and work. The mechanic additionally collaborates closely with operations, electrical, and instrumentation teams to maintain system integrity and operational efficiency. Requirements

  • 6+ months of training beyond High School in Water/Wastewater plant operation and 1 to 3 years' experience in water/wastewater plant operation and maintenance, or related work
  • Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Grade 4 Water/Wastewater Operator License
  • Standard practices, methods and materials of assigned work
  • Business math concepts and computations
  • Filing and record-keeping principles for organizing, maintaining, and updating records, files, data and documentation
  • Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices
  • Uses and properties for operating or otherwise utilizing supplies, tools, and equipment, including specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment
  • Interpreting and applying federal, state and local laws, codes, and regulations
  • Principles and practices of providing customer service
  • Conducting inspections, equipment testing and providing preventative maintenance.
  • Organizing tasks, meeting deadlines and prioritizing competing demands, including directing others in coordinating work to meet service standards
  • Providing attention to detail, proofreading, and error correction in assignments
  • Comprehending reference books and manuals
  • Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications
  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

Responsibilities

  • Performs complex mechanical diagnostics, repairs, and overhauls of pumps, motors, compressors, blowers, piping systems, and other plant equipment.
  • Maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, upgrades, and installs machinery and equipment in a high volume, continuous-run working environment.
  • Leads or assists in the installation, alignment, and calibration of mechanical systems and rotating equipment.
  • Inspects equipment to identify wear, corrosion, and malfunctions to determine repair priorities and perform necessary maintenance
  • Maintains and update maintenance records using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
  • Serves as technical resource and mentor for less experienced mechanics and technicians.
  • Coordinates with operations, electrical, and instrumentation staff to support cross-functional plant maintenance activities.
  • Fabricates parts or make modifications using welding, cutting, or machining tools when needed
  • Ensures compliance with safety protocols and environmental regulations during maintenance activities
  • Participates in on-call rotation and responds to emergency maintenance needs
