About The Position

The Lead Planning and Optimization Engineer for Continuous Improvement (CI) plays a key role in developing and executing the transformation roadmap to evolve MPC's CI functional capabilities and operational framework. This role is focused on building the systems, tools, and processes that will frame the company's CI program. This role requires a hands-on leader with demonstrated experience driving performance improvements in commercial optimization and value chain processes, capable of independently leading initiatives while also developing team capability. Experience in Planning and Backcasting preferred.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering required.
  • Ten (10) years relevant experience required.
  • Capable of analyzing complex data, identifying trends, and proposing solutions autonomously.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience executing Regional Backcasting and method used to develop the MPC Continual Commercial Improvement Processes.
  • Experience in planning, backcasting, scheduling, refinery operations, and commercial activities.
  • Demonstrates an advanced understanding of refinery operations, economics, and market dynamics across the value chain.
  • Able to mentor intermediate engineers in planning and optimization strategies.
  • Deep understanding of the connection of Value Chain Optimization processes.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Aspen PIMS Expert User, APS (experience), Data Integration Projects.
  • Awareness of Continuous Improvement maturity models, and capability frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support the development and implementation of evaluations for near-term and short-term planning decisions and processes.
  • Enhance regional and refinery backcasting process with a focus on XPIMS/PIMS model and alignment with actual process performance.
  • Implement DPO backasting capabilities to strengthen planning and decision making.
  • Engage in the development of new near-term processes to initiate the definition of the evaluation/lookback processes.
  • Support the development and execution of the CI transformation roadmap in close partnership with the Sr. Director of Business Transformation/CI Functional Lead.
  • Serve as the first-line supervisor for CI specialists/analysts, with accountability for performance management, coaching, and professional development.
  • Lead and manage transformation activities in the VCO CI roadmap following the VCO Delivery Governance Framework.
  • Coordinate CI efforts across business functions and regions to ensure enterprise alignment, integration, and adoption.
  • Develop and implement standard methodologies, frameworks, and knowledge-sharing tools that enable CI teams to scale.
  • Define and monitor performance metrics to evaluate CI functional maturity and support continuous improvement.
