About The Position

The Lead Pharmacy Technician at the Department of Veterans Affairs Atlanta VA Medical Center is responsible for overseeing pharmacy operations, guiding and training pharmacy staff, and ensuring the efficient workflow of pharmacy activities. This role involves significant complexity and leadership, as the technician leads a team of at least three GS-7 or higher technicians, coordinating both inpatient and outpatient pharmacy services. The position requires a comprehensive understanding of pharmacy practices and policies, as well as the ability to evaluate and improve service delivery.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or at least 3 months of experience.
  • Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required for GS-6 and above positions.
  • One year of experience at the GS-07 level, demonstrating required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in specialized areas of pharmacy such as sterile compounding or clinical pharmacy.
  • Skills in training and orienting pharmacy staff and students.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the pharmacy supervisor in quality improvement activities.
  • Assess workload volume and make staffing adjustments as needed.
  • Identify areas of duplication and develop solutions to streamline processes.
  • Organize and assist the pharmacy technician team to ensure timely and accurate task completion.
  • Promote harmonious relationships within the work environment.
  • Listen to and address informal complaints from employees and customers.
  • Train and orient new and existing pharmacy technicians and students on policies and procedures.
  • Identify and report developmental and training needs for safety and quality control.
  • Develop training schedules in coordination with the pharmacy education program manager.
  • Evaluate pharmacy activities to management to obtain objectives and goals.
  • Conduct technician meetings to assure proper updates of departmental communications.
  • Assist in the development of policies and procedures and participate in departmental goal planning.
