About The Position

The Lead Pharmacy Technician performs, under supervision, a variety of technical duties related to the preparing and dispensed of drugs according to standard procedures. In conjunction with the Pharmacy Manager, takes a leadership role among the pharmacy technicians in training and maintaining drug inventory in the pharmacy department.

Requirements

  • The position requires a high school education and previous experience.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform basic mathematics is required.
  • Good communication skills will also be required for retention as well as extreme attention to details.
  • Basic secretarial skills are desirable, including familiarity or ability to learn Microsoft office applications (Word, Excel, Access).
  • Familiarization with the inner workings of pharmacy management.
  • Reporting functions of Meditech and related software programs.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification
  • The pharmacy technician must have a current (or in the process of obtaining), valid license as a registered pharmacy technician in the state of Pennsylvania
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, aseptic technique, principles of drug distribution and good communication skills will also be required for retention.
  • Familiarization with pharmacy stock and distribution procedures.
  • Drug nomenclature.
  • Dosage calculations.
  • Commonly used drugs names.
  • Uses of medications and the ability to read a prescription.
  • Experience in IV admixture including use of syringes.
  • Stroke education is required.

Responsibilities

  • Carry containers of medicine in and around the hospital.
  • Count and fill different forms of medicine for pharmacist verification prior to dispensing.
  • Type, print, or generate labels from the computer.
  • Maintain and file records which are related to the practice of pharmacy and annual educational competencies.
  • Reconstitute and prepare IV admixtures, parenteral products and other medications for pharmacist check and verification.
  • Count and prepare drugs for automated dispensing cabinet restock after pharmacist verification.
  • Assist the pharmacy manager or pharmacy supervisors in the preparation of statistical information and auditing waste, discrepancies, and usage for the automated dispensing machines (Omnicells) and within the 340b program.
  • Assist the pharmacy manager or pharmacy supervisors in creating and updating technician schedules
  • Assist in the maintenance of required quality assurance, legal and fiscal responsibility documentation.
  • Assists in the training of new pharmacy technician hires and education of pharmacy staff on new medications, procedures, and safety protocols
  • Assists with media fill testing in conjugation with the pharmacy manager and supervisors
  • Prepare tables and various forms in Word or Excel format for distribution
  • Assist manager in design of physical layout of the department and the management of drug inventory.
  • Review and maintain records pertinent for compliance and licensing surveyors.
  • Other clerical and staffing tasks as assigned by the pharmacy manager or pharmacy supervisor
  • Completes at least 1 patient safety initiative or 1 quality improvement project within the pharmacy department approved by the pharmacy manager
  • Staffs as necessary in the department based on scheduling needs
