About The Position

The Lead Patient Transport Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, timely, and efficient movement of patients throughout the hospital. This position serves as the front-line coordinator of the Patient Transport team, supporting daily operations and driving process excellence. With a focus on high-demand areas such as Emergency Department (ED) transfers, inpatient discharges, and PACU-to-unit transitions, the Lead Specialist helps reduce delays, improve throughput, enhance the patient experience, and serve as a point person for front-line leaders and team members. This role is responsible for monitoring transport demand in real-time, coordinating team response, and ensuring that transport operations are running smoothly servicing procedural departments to maintain on time appointments for adjacent departments. The Lead Patient Transport Specialist is a process expert and a key contributor to hospital-wide service excellence and length-of-stay improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and manage the transport job queue and assignments to ensure timely response and alignment with hospital throughput goals.
  • Serve as the on-site lead for the transport team, providing guidance, support, and real-time problem-solving.
  • Escalate issues and collaborate with clinical teams to resolve barriers to patient movement.
  • Coordinate and execute new transport assignments from the ED to diagnostic and procedural areas (e.g., CT, MRI, lab).
  • Oversee inpatient discharges and PACU-to-unit transfers, ensuring safe and efficient handoffs.
  • Support round-trip transports for procedures and testing.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for transport workflows, equipment handling, and documentation standards.
  • Identify opportunities for operational improvement and collaborate with leadership to implement changes.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and safety procedures.
  • Mentor, train, and onboard new and existing specialists.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, service excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Support morale and team cohesion through daily engagement and recognition.
  • Maintain high standards of professionalism and compassion when interacting with patients, families, and staff.
  • Communicate effectively with nursing units, procedural areas, and support services.
  • Document transport activities accurately and adhere to infection prevention best practices while ensuring equipment and designated areas are clean and maintained.
