About The Position

The Lead Patient Care Technician in the Medical Unit at UPMC Harrisburg is responsible for performing core nursing assistant responsibilities and additional hospital-identified tasks. This includes patient care activities such as blood glucose monitoring, vital signs, specimen collections, and assisting with daily living activities. The technician will also provide support for physical and respiratory therapies, document patient care, and ensure compliance with safety policies. The role involves effective communication with the healthcare team and participation in departmental initiatives.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 3 years of healthcare experience required.
  • Successful completion of PCT, Senior training (if not already complete at time of hire).
  • Successful completion of basic information system training.
  • Microcomputer experience preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • ACLS preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Responsibilities

  • Perform UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities including blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, restraint placement and removal, specimen collections, and Foley care.
  • Perform hospital-identified tasks such as phlebotomy, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, IV catheter removal, and ticket to ride.
  • Assist with patient procedures and activities of daily living.
  • Provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care and report changes in patient status.
  • Provide instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures relative to patient care and hospital-related information.
  • Document in the medical record according to established procedures.
  • Complete department clerical functions as needed.
  • Support UPMC Experience Initiatives.
  • Participate in self-review as requested by the unit director.
  • Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department.
  • Establish effective communication with other departments.
  • Contribute to universal unit activities including responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
  • Participate in the on-boarding and precepting of new staff.
  • Participate on department and facility-based committees.
  • Model clear and effective communication with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Support safety in the workplace and develop productive working relationships.
