About The Position

Performs responsible para-professional tasks as assigned by assistant prosecuting attorneys; research complex legal issues and draft memorandums, prepare initial briefs, petitions, motions, complaints, answers and investigative subpoenas, attends trials, prepares trial exhibits, analyzes and redacts video evidence for trial ensures discovery compliance; Works under general supervision; Performs related duties as required.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Pre-Law/Social Science, or an equivalent law related field -AND- two (2) years' experience as a Paralegal -AND- passing score on the Genesee County Lead Paralegal Exam;
• Associate degree in an accredited Paralegal Program, Criminal Justice or other social science field -AND- four (4) years' experience as a Paralegal -AND- passing score on the Genesee County Lead Paralegal Exam;
• Paralegal Certification or similar -AND- five (5) years' experience as a secretary in a legal setting -AND- passing score on the Genesee County Lead Paralegal Exam;
• Seven (7) years' experience in a Prosecuting Attorney's office or Law Enforcement Office (state, local or federal) -AND- passing score on Genesee County Legal Assistant Competency Exam -AND- passing score on the Genesee County Lead Paralegal Exam.

Responsibilities

• Prepares various legal documents necessary to the criminal justice process, neglect-abuse process, child support process or civil law process with or without clerical assistance including motions and briefs.
• Performs complex, detailed legal research using Westlaw and writing assignments as required.
• Drafting and formatting the table of authorities in the briefs and checking legal citations for proper formatting.
• Assists attorneys in the courtroom, including gathering witnesses, liaising with law enforcement, review of pleadings, overseeing conviction integrity process compliance, and managing correspondence with defense attorneys.
• In civil cases -Drafting interrogatories and Conducting personal, detailed interviews with clients and witnesses.
• Reviews forensic evidence and liaises with experts including MSP labs and Forensic pathologists and medical experts .
• Drafts sentence memorandums and prepares sentence guidelines.
• Liaises with DHHS and GHS and other partner agencies to ensure follow through and procedural compliance.
• Liaises with police departments to review available evidence, recommend forensic testing and prepares trial exhibits for use in court.
