About The Position

The Lead Operating Room Assistant (ORA) is responsible for organizing and supervising the daily work activities of the orderlies (day or evening), assuring that the daily tasks of the ORA's are completed thoroughly and accurately. Other duties include: orientation and mentoring of staff, problem-solving equipment issues, providing feedback for employee evaluations and budget and assisting in the Quality Improvement Process. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • One (1) year of directly related work experience
  • Ability to be flexible in assignment and able to work different shifts if required
  • Ability to demonstrate customer service skills in interactions with all patients, families and staff, including high volume and stressful situations
  • Ability to learn and evaluate new equipment and procedures quickly
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Ability to problem-solve effectively using appropriate resources. Is productive in workflow, skills and organization
  • Ability to provide appropriate care based on the needs of the individual taking into consideration age, culture, and developmental issues
  • Ability to provide care as needed and as described in the department’s policies and procedures

  • Knowledge of basic nursing and medical terminology
  • Knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation methods, practices, and procedures
  • Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area
  • Knowledge of location, operation and maintenance of common equipment and supplies located in the operating room region
  • Knowledge of normal temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiratory rate of healthy adult, adolescents, children and infants (LPCH only)
  • Knowledge of principles of growth and development over the age groups life span and an understanding of the range of treatment needed by these patients (LPCH only)
  • Knowledge of protocols for patient records
  • BLS - Basic Life Support

Responsibilities

  • Able to perform all the duties assigned to Operating Room Assistants (ORA's).
  • Acts as a resource to staff, managers and physicians on room set up, room turnover, equipment identification and basic cleaning of equipment and rooms.
  • Assigns, organizes and coordinates the activities of the Orderly Pool including transportation and assistance to PACU /SAU, taking into consideration priorities and deadlines.
  • Assists employees with unusual situations which do not have clear precedents.
  • Assures replacement or repair of malfunctioning equipment.
  • Assures that par levels of supplies for the environmental maintenance and running of the OR region are adequate (e.g. forms, solutions, formalin, etc.)
  • Identifies and shares recommendations for containing costs in assigned area.
  • Maintains an effective working relationship with staff, managers, physicians, patients and heir families.
  • Monitors ORA's job performance and coaches/counsels as needed to assure standards are being followed and staff functions efficiently and effectively.
  • Participates in the monitoring and documenting of quality improvement issues.
  • Participates on unit, department or hospital committees as requested.
  • Proactively uses the problem solving process to identify, prevent or resolve inter-or intra-departmental problems.
  • Provides input related to staffs performance to assist the OR Environmental Supervisor in writing evaluations.
  • Responsible for self assessment of skill level and seeking resources to learn new skills, equipment or procedures to maintain currency in position.
  • Supports administrative decisions and assures implementation and compliance with all department, institutional and regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Works with clinical educator to orient new staff members and students to role of ORA as requested.
