About The Position

Under supervision of the Director and Technical Director, the Lead MRI Research Technologist will manage and run MRI scanning at the Northeastern University Biomedical Imaging Center (NUBIC), located in the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex (ISEC) on Columbus Avenue. In this leadership role, the technologist will supervise daily operations of the MRI facility. Core duties include overseeing all aspects of MR safety as the acting Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO) for NUBIC; onboarding, training, and supervising qualified laboratory staff and students in operating the MRI and performing comprehensive MR safety screenings; managing scheduling, imaging protocols, supply inventory, and equipment quality control; and coordinating workflow to maximize efficiency and research quality. Additional responsibilities will include operating the MRI scanner for MRI research studies as outlined by study protocols; developing and conducting research procedures (including safety protocols); working closely with research study groups to ensure success as outlined in the study design; developing and conducting MR safety training for investigators, students, and staff; running scanner quality assurance testing; and performing MRI scanner troubleshooting. The Technologist will be key to developing, administering, and supervising effective and safe human MRI screening and scanning procedures as the NUBIC's MRSO. Technical background in MRI scanning is imperative, and the applicant should be ARRT certified and registered with over 10 years of experience. Some research scanning experience is required. The Lead MRI Research Technologist will lay the framework for MRI scanning at NUBIC.

Requirements

  • Incumbent requires a minimum of at least 10 years of experience as an MRI Technologist, including some experience in advanced/research MRI scanning, and a minimum of 3 years in a supervisory role such as a Lead or Chief Technologist.
  • Incumbent requires a minimum education as a graduate of an ARRT approved Radiology and/or MR training program.
  • Must be ARRT certified and have successful completion of MR Registry exam.
  • Furthermore, they also need to have a Massachusetts Radiologic Technologist License and to be or willing to become certified as a Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO).
  • A great deal of analytical skill is required to ensure high quality scans.
  • The incumbent must analyze subject position, scanner position, and scanning methods as they relate to the scanning protocol and perform miscellaneous trouble-shooting to provide quality scans that meet the needs of the research protocol.
  • The incumbent must also be open to all aspects of the research work conducted at NUBIC, including data analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO) for NUBIC
  • Create, maintain and administer safety training program for investigators, staff, and students
  • Onboard, train, and supervise qualified laboratory staff and students in operating the MRI and performing comprehensive MR safety screenings
  • Have a major role in evaluating students' abilities to independently conduct their experiments on the scanner
  • Oversee the Web based scanner scheduling system
  • Create, maintain and administer safety training for emergency situations and for first responders
  • Oversee maintenance and use of MRI Scanner
  • Execute basic and advanced scan protocols related to brain imaging
  • Troubleshoot common problems and run scanner quality assurance testing
  • Ensure compliance with all safety requirements
  • Provide routine maintenance of scanner
  • Move/archive/print imaging data
  • Manage supply inventory and equipment quality control
  • Work closely with research study groups to ensure success of study design
  • Collaborate with investigators, students, and staff on research
  • Guide researchers in the preparation of IRB protocols and ensure research activities comply with the protocols
  • Screen, brief, and motivate human subjects
  • Apply knowledge of data analysis in informing good scanning procedures
  • Develop new and more effective scanning procedures to meet research needs
