About The Position

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface. We're seeking an experienced Motor Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design and development of cryogenic electric motors for NASA's Artemis lunar lander systems. You'll drive electromagnetic design, thermal management strategies, and performance analysis while collaborating with internal teams and external suppliers to source, qualify, and certify high-reliability components for spaceflight. This role offers the opportunity to contribute directly to humanity's expansion into space through innovative propulsion technologies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field (Master's preferred)
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience designing, manufacturing, and testing electrically driven motors for industrial or space applications
  • Advanced proficiency in CAD design (Creo preferred) and PLM systems, such as BOM structuring and engineering change management
  • Strong expertise in mechanical engineering fundamentals: materials, heat treatments, statics, dynamics, and mechanics of materials
  • Demonstrated experience with electromagnetic simulation tools and high-volume motor component manufacturing (stamping, winding, welding)
  • Proficiency in FEA analysis (Ansys), MATLAB, and/or Python for performance modeling
  • Skilled in GD&T, tolerance stack analysis, and precision manufacturing for demanding environments
  • Deep understanding of motor design optimization: torque, power, efficiency, and thermal management

Nice To Haves

  • Cryogenic motor design experience
  • 7+ years leading validation efforts in automotive or high-power applications

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical components of cryogenic motors (stators, rotors, windings, integration) and iterate designs to optimize performance, manufacturability, and cost
  • Conduct stress analysis on motor components under operational and lunar mission loads
  • Lead engineering activities across winding technologies, magnet materials, lamination methods, and electrical interconnections
  • Guide full product lifecycle development from requirements through manufacturing, testing, and flight qualification
  • Collaborate cross-functionally from concept through prototyping to mass production
  • Communicate technical concepts effectively across all senior stakeholders and functional teams

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, paid parental leave, short and long-term disability, 401(k) with a company match of up to 5%, and an Education Support Program.
