About The Position

The Sensors Division within STR focuses on the development and analysis of advanced sensor systems in the RF, acoustic, and electro-optical domains. This includes the design and development of novel sensors and advanced information processing techniques from ideation to prototype implementations. The Undersea Systems and Acoustics (USA) Group develops and delivers advanced undersea sensor and signal processing systems related to intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and counter-ISR applications. The USA Group is hiring a modeling and simulation engineer to develop modeling and simulation environments and models specifically focused on evaluating the performance of distributed autonomous undersea acoustic systems and autonomy for those systems. These models will be integrated into hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) testing and used for verification and validation at various levels of complexity and demonstrated on hardware in laboratory settings and in the field. Key to this role is the ability to implement dynamic simulations tying autonomy design to acoustics and system metrics.

Requirements

  • Experience using modeling and simulation to set system performance expectations for advanced undersea acoustic systems
  • Proficiency in MATLAB and/or Python as well as other higher-level languages
  • Strong Mathematical, troubleshooting, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to obtain a Top Secret (TS) Security Clearance, and eligible to support special access programs, for which U.S citizenship is needed by the U.S government
  • BS + 7 years, MS + 5 years experience, or PhD + 2 years relevant experience

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in Mission Oriented Operating Suite Interval Programming (MOOS-IvP) and Laboratory for Autonomous Marine Sensing Systems (LAMSS)
  • Active Top Secret (TS) security clearance
  • Experience interacting with U.S. Navy and other U.S. Government organizations and processes
  • Experience with field testing, especially at-sea testing including system deployment, operation, and recovery operations

Responsibilities

  • Modeling and Simulation for advanced acoustic systems applications
  • Perform detailed active and passive acoustic system performance analysis and develop methods to improve performance
  • Characterize sonar system performance including signal and noise analysis, evaluation of beamforming techniques, adaptive signal processing, detection, and tracking
  • Work as part of a team to develop, implement, and test signal processing algorithms and innovative sonar system concepts including advanced signal processing techniques
